She shrugs.

“Could you not tell that I wanted you to do it?” I ask.

She gasps. “Why?”

“I told you. I prefer to be married to you. You’re not clingy, you’re not boring, and you—”

“Yes, caveman, I got you the first time. Why did you need me to do it? You could have put Vanessa out of her misery much sooner.”

“Oh, ‘Nessa will be fine, don’t worry.”

“I’m surprised she’s that upset over it. I thought she wanted Xavier. Or…”

I see the questions brewing in her eyes, but I don’t want to talk about Vanessa right now. “She and I don’t have history, if that’s where you’re going with that. However, I do have a serious question for you.”

“What’s that?”

“Are you a fan of shrinks?”

She chuckles. “Why are you going to make me see one?”

“No, the reason I turned you down was because of Xavier. He’s convinced I’d put you in the shrink’s chair. And I like you too much to do that. So you have to promise to stay away from them.”

“Noted. Funny, Bonnie too worries for us. Thinks one of us should tone down their inner control freak and let the other lead. She had the nerve to suggest that person should be me.”

“Interesting. And what do you think about that?” I approach her slowly, a predatory gleam in my eye, already warming to the thought of showing her what that would look like between us.

She smirks, then as if reading my thoughts, smoothly deflects. “I think both our friends are right to be concerned about us. Don’t you?”

“Absolutely.” Finally giving in to the urge beating down on me since she walked in, I turn her toward the panoramic view of Manhattan and wrap my arm around her waist, roughly dragging her back into my front.

Fuck, she feels good. Small-boned, petite, but also tough and resilient.

“Are we like… hugging? Because it feels weird.” She snarks.

“Shut up. This is a thank you for crashing my wedding.”

“Hmm. So how does this work?”

“Well, I recommend you read the rest of the document.”

“That sounds ominous. I wonder if that was why you distracted me with sex before I could get through the damn thing.”

“No, that was why I offered you a stiff drink before we started.”

She laughs, the sound washing over me and making me smile.

“We’ll need to apply for a new license, I’ll need a new witness since we’ve pissed off Xavi.”

“We’ll need another officiant too.” She points out cheekily.

“True. The minister was quite put out by my philandering ways wasn’t he?”

“Ryan Fairchild, you know I hate it when you talk like that.”

“I love the way you hate it.”

“Good thing we’re getting divorced in a matter of months then.”
