“That will never happen. I’ll always have your back Jordan.”

“I hope you know I didn’t do this for you Mother. This might be the last time I take any direction from you. In fact, I can guarantee I won’t listen to you in the future.”

“What else is new? I’ve still got your back. Besides, I trust your judgment.”

“You had the last CEO’s back too.”

“I didn’t give birth to the last CEO.” She shrugs, looking steadily at me with her vivid, blue eyes.

“I suppose I can’t argue with that logic.”

“So,” I lean back on the chair, “what’s the real reason you want a divorce Mother?”

“Because I’m sick of being controlled.”

I have to laugh. “Mother, I sense you enjoy being underestimated, but I’m not buying that.”

“Well?” I prompt when she remains silent.

“There’s someone else.”

“Interesting. Father must be a hard act to follow.”

“Hardly.” She scoffs.

“So who’s the lucky guy?”

She hesitates and I think she’s a little afraid, but finally, she admits it. “My therapist.”

“Wow. Isn't there some rule against that somewhere?”

She shrugs. “I’m sure there is.”

I smile. “How long?”

“Give or take, eighteen years.”

“Jesus, Mother. So why now?”

“If Brendan finds out, he’ll kill him and I can't bear for that to happen.”

“The risk was there from day one. I’d say you’re eighteen years too late. Why do you suddenly care after all this time?”

“Because now I’m—”

“Lemme guess, in love with the guy?”

Mother only smiles shyly. “I hear there’s a woman in your life. The same one?”

Of course, Letty has blabbed to Merry and Mother. “The very same.”

“Persistency does run in our blood after all. And could she have anything to do with why you suddenly decided to do this, to fight back?"

“She has everything to do with it.”

“Well then, I must meet her to thank her properly for rekindling my son's fiery spirit, and making my dreams come true.”

"Bree's amazing. You'll love her." So would Merry. I just need to get her to trust me again.
