“What are you going to have?” Cameron asked me.

“I think I’ll start with the Caprese salad and then try the Ricotta pasta,” I replied.

“That sounded good. I think I’ll try the seafood combo. I might have to steal a bite of your pasta and see how it is,” he said.

Cameron held my gaze as he spoke and I almost thought he was flirting with me. I shouldn’t have thought a comment about sharing my dinner would make me think that, but it did. It only showed me how far gone I had come when it came to Cameron and wanting to see something that wasn’t there.

“What are you two going to have?” I asked Laura and Alison and turned to them.

We discussed our menu options and then ordered when Sergio came back. Cameron ordered us a bottle of wine and we chatted easily while we waited for it to show up.

“Alison, did I hear you say are you finally going to try SCUBA diving?” Cameron asked.

“Possibly. I don’t know. I don’t like the idea of being surrounded by that much water and not having a way out,” she said.

“A way out? You just go up to the surface,” Laura said.

“Not if you are thirty feet down. That’s a long way to hold your breath,” Alison said.

“I think the whole point is that you shouldn’t hold your breath. You have a tank of air, you use that to breathe,” Laura said.

“Yeah, I think I’ll just stick with snorkeling.”

“If you want someone to go with you, I’ll do it,” Laura said.

“Really?” I asked. Laura wasn’t one to get her hair wet, much less get in the water.

“Sure, why not? It could be fun. I could see all the fish close up and then see them again when I have them for dinner,” Laura said.

“And now, I definitely don’t want to go,” Alison said and shook her head.

“You said you wanted to do one adventurous thing. We should try this?” Laura asked Alison.

“I’ll think about it. Does anyone else want to go?” Alison asked Cameron and me.

“I’m already certified and not interested in doing a resort course with you. Let me know if you ever get your license and I will gladly go with you,” Cameron said.

“Thank you but no. I’m too claustrophobic to even try it,” I admitted.

“Really? I always found being in the water freeing not confining,” Cameron said.

“Water is denser than air,” I countered.

“True, I never thought of it that way. It’s the weightlessness that I like, the floating. If you all get certified we could go to Cozumel and try diving there. All you do is float and let the current take you. It’s one of my favorite ways to dive as you just hang out and let the animals move around you.”

“You don’t seem like a man who just lets things come to you,” Laura said.

“I can when the situation calls for it,” Cameron said with a slow smile. “Sometimes the best thing you can do is just wait and see what happens. It doesn’t always work to push something when it doesn’t want to be pushed. Wouldn’t you agree, Syd?”

His eyes held mine as he spoke and I realized there was a double meaning to his comment. Was he talking about me? Was he talking about us? Was he telling me he was just waiting for me to make a move towards him?

“I’m, I’m not sure,” I stammered.

Luckily, I was saved from having to say anything more as the food arrived and we dug in. I eyed Cameron’s seafood combination and was impressed with how much variety there was. He saw me looking at it and reached over and put a few mussels and a large piece of lobster on my plate.

“Thank you,” I said as I took a bite out of the lobster.

It was light and buttery and melted in my mouth. I didn’t mean to but I moaned my approval and then looked over at Cameron. His mouth was slightly open as if he couldn’t believe that the noise had come out of my mouth. His eyes held mine in what I could only describe as desire and it was such a shock I had to look away.
