“I can steal vehicles now? Wow, why didn’t anyone tell me?” I joke, trying to lighten my thoughts.

She laughs. “Well, you’ll have to explain it to the king and trust me, that dungeon is not a fun place.”

“There’s a dungeon?”

“Well, yes.” She’s still laughing. “But I don’t think it’s been used in a century or so.”

I shake my head. Royalty is weird. “I don’t know how to get to the palace.”

“There’s only one road, my friend. Just head away from the ranch. After a little while, you’ll see the palace in the distance. It’s the big building up on the hill with the spires and stuff.”

I laugh. “Right. Okay.”

“You’re doing great, Princess Abigail,” Linnea says, her tone softer and sincere.

“Thank you.”

We disconnect and I go to pack an overnight bag. Then I pack for two nights.

And then I get in the truck and head toward the palace. On purpose.

With my nerves jumping, my heart beating with excitement. And my pink cowboy boots on.

The drive is easy and it’s impossible to get lost.

The road from the ranch to the main village is a straight shot and once in the village everything opens up and basically directs me right to the castle’s gates.

I pull up next to the guard’s station and roll the window down. Okay, this might be interesting. I don’t have an ID card or anything.

“Hi. I’m?—”

“Good afternoon, Princess Abigail.” The guard bows and opens the gate.

Or this might be super easy. “You know who I am?”

He looks surprised. “Of course.”

“How? I’ve only been here once. And you weren’t on duty.”

“You remember who was on duty?” he asks.

I shrug. “Yes.”

He seems strangely pleased by that. “Well, of course we know who you are. We’ve seen photos and have a full description. We also know the truck.”

“Oh.” That makes sense. But it’s strange, too. “So I can just go in?”

“Of course. Though I’m sure staff will meet you at the door.” He leans in slightly with a concerned look. “We weren’t expecting you, though. And you should have someone with you. Is everything all right?”

I’m supposed to have someone with me? “Do I need to call ahead when I want to visit?” I ask. “I don’t know what number to call. I wanted to surprise the prince.”

He smiles. “You don’t have to call ahead, Princess Abigail. You are free to come and go however you like. But you should have security with you.”

“Oh.” I nod. “Okay. I’ll remember that.” I’m not sure who that would be if Jonah isn’t around. “Don’t tell the prince I came alone,” I say. Torin might be upset about that if there’s really a reason we need constant security.

“All right,” he agrees without hesitation.

Then I lift a brow. “Are you able to keep information from the prince?”
