Chapter 37

Abigail

The door shuts behind me and Torin is already crossing the room. “Abigail. What are you doing here?”

“Surprise.” I smile at him, but immediately notice his intense frown. “Uh, I should have called.”

“Are you all right?”

Yes, surprising the prince is difficult. Everyone assumes it means something bad happened. I feel bad about that.

“Yes, of course! I was just eager to see you and didn’t want to wait for you to get home. And I knew you had a dinner tonight and thought maybe I’d crash it.” I wince. “Maybe that was a bad idea.”

Then his arms are around me and his face is buried in my neck and he’s taking a huge deep breath as he lifts me off the ground. I wrap my arms around his neck as he turns and carries me toward his desk. He sweeps a bunch of papers out of the way and deposits me in the center, then braces his hands on either side of my hips, leaning in.

“I’m so fucking glad to see you.”

“Oh good.” I smile. “I wasn’t sure suddenly if this was okay.”

He shifts, putting both hands on my face. “It is always okay for you to come to me.”

There’s something about how he says that, or the look in his eyes, or something that makes me go all melty. “I’ve missed you,” I tell him softly.

“I’m glad.” He leans down and kisses me.

Immediately I wrap my arms around his neck, needing to be closer to him. He came back here because he needed to. I understand that. But God, being without him has been harder than I expected. I’ve been busy. I’ve been doing everything I would normally be doing if I was still living in Nebraska or Louisiana—working, reading, cooking—but I’ve felt more alone than ever and things have felt empty.

I scoot closer to the edge of the desk, and he leans into me, deepening the kiss. His hands are in my hair, his tongue is in my mouth, and he gives that low groan that always makes my pussy clench.

“God, princess, I need you.”

“Yes.”

He kisses me again, then lifts his head. “I have a meeting.”

I blow out a breath. “That’s okay. I can wait. I’m staying tonight. And tomorrow. I know there’s a family dinner tonight, right? And I had this idea that Linnea and I?—”

He’s kissing me again. Thoroughly. His fingers are tight in my hair and he’s devouring my mouth. When he lets me up for air long moments later, he says, “I saw your video call with the kids.”

I feel my instantaneous smile. “You did? Oh, I’m glad. It was so fun.”

He traces a finger over my cheek. “You light up. You did it on camera. And just now. Do you know that?”

“Really?”

“You were so fucking beautiful—are so fucking beautiful—when you’re into your work and your passion.”

My heart melts at that too. “Thank you. It was…good. It felt good.”

“I’m glad. And I—” He shakes his head. “Just fucking need you.”

“We have tonight. I’ll be here.”

But he leans past me and pushes a button on the phone sitting on his desk. “Samuel, push them back twenty minutes.”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

He disconnects.
