“I’ll wait by the front doors,” I tell him. I hold up a hand when he starts to protest. “But I promise I won’t leave.”

He nods, then hurries off.

I continue down the steps. I pass one of the large mirrors in the main hall and check over my appearance. This is very casual. Even if it is a pub, should I dress up more than this?

I run my hand over my sweatshirt. It’s a deep maroon with the crest of my college on it.

Hmm…maybe not very princess-y.

Then again, I’ve been in lots of photos in my green rubber boots.

I do reach up and pull my ponytail loose, though. I shake my hair out and run my fingers through it. I never wear a lot of make-up, so people haven’t seen me too made up. And I’ve only worn my tiara once.

Still…I wonder if Sean will have an opinion about what I’m wearing.

“Abigail?”

I turn quickly at the familiar voice. “Jonah,” I say with surprise.

“You want to go to the pub?”

“Oh no, they woke you up?”

He frowns. “Of course they did. I’m to be informed of all of your and Torin’s movements.”

“I didn’t know that. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.” He holds out a black cap. “You should probably wear this.”

“What’s this?”

“A hat,” he says with a brow up. Then he smiles. “It’s Linnea’s. I think you going to the pub is fine. Really great actually. But it might not be what you’re expecting. We can keep you a little incognito until you decide you really want to stay.”

“You think I might not?”

“I think you’re a serious introvert who just recently even started appearing on camera in videos with little kids. I think it’s huge that you even think you want to go to the pub and I’m very happy to take you, but I think having an out might not be a terrible thing.”

I think about that. That’s really sweet. I take the cap. “Thank you. I really appreciate that.”

“I really appreciate how good you are for my best friend,” he says. “And the woman I love. And…just in general. You’re good, Abigail. I’m here to help.”

Then I do the second most out-of-character thing. I step forward and hug Jonah.

He’s not just surprised. He’s shocked. But it only takes a second for him to hug me back. When I step away, smiling, he’s also smiling.

“Am I dressed all right?” I ask, looking down.

“Yep. Perfect.”

I turn to the mirror and put the cap on, adjusting it on my head and arranging my hair. Then I turn back to him. “Ready.”

“I’m glad you think so,” he says with a light chuckle. He pulls the door open, gives Sean a little wave, and ushers me through.

As we walk, I ask, “Why aren’t you at the pub with Torin if you need to keep track of every movement?”

“When we’re in Cara, it’s okay to just know where he is and that someone is with him. I don’t need to be with him physically all the time.”

I shoot him a smirk. “But you always were anyway, before Linnea right?”
