Well, now I’m going to have to see that.

“But...” Charlie says. She doesn’t look happy.

“What?” I ask suspiciously.

“We found out some other stuff. Well, one other important thing.”

Obviously, it’s not something good. And I don’t think it’s about his crown. “I thought you knew him,” I say. Torin had lived in Autre for a few months. And my sisters know his sister really well.

“Sure. Kind of,” Charlie says. “I mean, I know he’s a great guy. Funny. Intelligent. There for his family. Cocky, but in a charming way.”

“That seems like how he is to me too,” I say. Not to mention sexy as hell and a dirty talker and very good with his hands, but I don’t need to tell them those details. At least, not yet. They’re really making me hesitate to go into this any further. “What did you find out?” I ask, feeling my stomach twisting.

“Well…” Ami starts. Then she says, “Fuck,” softly. “I’m sorry, honey.”

“Sorry about what?” I lean forward. “What did you find out?”

What could it possibly be? He’s not a criminal or a…well, dammit…maybe he is a criminal. Maybe he’s embezzled money from his country. But can a prince do that? Do the people of Cara pay taxes? And how do monarchies really work? I’m not sure. I need to read more about that. Presumably, the royal family can spend the money how they want. So it wouldn’t technically be embezzlement. But it would be a pretty shitty thing to do. Which would definitely make me not like him. Or…maybe he’s passed some law I’d hate. Something like allowing some rich chemical company to poison the water. Or making people pay exorbitant amounts for prescription drugs. Or…

“Did he put someone to death?” I ask.

Charlie and Ami both swing around to face the camera. “What?” Charlie demands.

“You’re acting like you found out something terrible about him,” I say, my heart pounding. “Do they execute people in Cara? Did he sentence someone to death? Or did he take away women’s rights? They don’t vote for leaders there, but do they vote for other things?” I’d briefly looked up the hierarchy of government but hadn’t dived into voting procedures or their constitution. “Do they only allow men to vote? Or did he burn down a rainforest or something? Tell me!”

“Holy crap,” Ami says, her hand on her chest. “No. It’s nothing like that.” She frowns. “It’s…” She looks at Charlie. “Better than that?”

“I’d think it’s better than killing people, yes,” Charlie says dryly.

“What about the voting thing? Will she think it’s better than taking women’s rights away?” Ami asks.

Charlie has to think about that. “Yes,” she decides after a second. “I think she would think rescinding voting rights would be worse. But what do they vote for in Cara?”

I pick up my phone and bang it on the table. “Hello! Sister having a meltdown here!” I hold the phone up in front of my face. “What. Is. It?”

“He’s not killing anyone or burning anything down,” Ami says quickly. “He’s just…engaged.”

I let out a breath. “Oh.” Then her words sink in. Really actually sink in. I stare into the phone. “He’s what?”

Ami winces and Charlie shakes her head. “He’s not engaged.” Now she grimaces too. “Yet.”

“What is going on?” My voice is shaky and my heart is pounding so hard I can hear my blood rushing in my head.

I know he’s supposed to get married. Before his grandfather has another heart attack. He’s very serious about that.

But he just proposed to me.

And he’s been flirt-texting with me ever since.

He can’t be engaged to someone else already.

Can he?

He proposed to you the second time you ever saw him. He could totally be engaged to someone else by now.

“He’s apparently involved with a woman named Linnea Olsen,” Charlie says. “She’s kind of famous in Cara. Her brother is Alex Olsen, a hockey player here in the US. And her sister is Astrid Olsen.”

I frown. “Astrid Olsen, the gymnast?”
