I stare at my screen, my thoughts swirling. I know if I don’t respond, he’s going to text me again. And I don’t know what to say. So I simply text,
I have to get on the plane now.
And then I shut my phone off.
Chapter 17
Abigail
There’s a black town car waiting for me when I land.
I’m not sure exactly where this IAS project is, but I’m confused as we head into the city rather than to a site outside the city limits.
“I’m sorry,” I say to the driver. “I’m here to check out a farming site. Are you sure you have the right address?” Am I about to get murdered?
“Yes, Ms. Landry. Here’s the address of the project site.” He hands back a piece of paper.
I read it. Then stare at it.
This is in my old neighborhood. This address would put the site right across the street from my old high school, two blocks from my elementary school, and five blocks from my parents’ house.
I text Lauren.
What kind of system are we installing in a residential neighborhood?
But I don’t hear back from her even five minutes later.
So I call Regina, Lauren and Mason’s executive assistant.
“Innovative Agricultural Solutions, this is Regina.”
“Hi, Regina, it’s Abi. Can I talk with Lauren?”
“Hi, Abi. Lauren is in a do-not-disturb meeting.”
“I understand, but I just landed in Shreveport for this site visit, and I think I need to know more about it before I get there.”
“Oh, yes, she said you might call about that and to tell you that it will be fine, and it will all make sense when you get there.”
