“I like him.”

“That’s also obvious.” She exhaled, but I could still hear her grumbling under her breath. “Just so you know, I talked to several of my colleagues. Don’t worry, I didn’t tell them your name. Yet. However, I let them learn about your circumstances.”

“And?” I turned my head in her direction. When she hesitated, trying to roll her eyes without me noticing her expression, I laughed. “I was right. There’s a chance James could win custody.”

“Let’s just say it would better for you to have an attorney who can fight the man’s attorney and his family. However, if that bastard of a man doesn’t stay away, you absolutely should file a restraining order.”

“In other words, I’m fucked.”

“In other words, you need to allow Sebastian to help you. Don’t be stupid about this.”

“I’m not stupid. I’m just terrified.”

Megan tapped her hand on the steering wheel. “Nothing good in this life happens unless you’re willing to risk your heart.”

My heart. The heavy weight on that particular muscle was coming close to suffocating me. I hated being terrified. I loathed doubting Sebastian, the connection and wild electricity we’d shared so special, but the ugly what-ifs continued to sear in my mind.

I stared out the window as I thought about both what she was saying and what Sebastian had spouted off. I’d been so angry with him, mostly because I’d felt hurt. Especially given our beautiful night and morning together. “I don’t know, Megan. We’re from two different worlds. I have a child and he’s never cared about anyone. He wouldn’t understand the kind of love and adoration that I…” I shook my head, hating myself for almost spouting off something that wasn’t possible.

“You love him?” she asked quietly.

“Yeah, so what?”

“You need to trust me in that he knows love and loss. He’s been hurt before just like you’ve been. You need to talk to him, Jess. I mean really talk. You both owe each other that. You know it.”

“I don’t owe anyone anything except my daughter. Just drive.”

“You’re going to lose something that could the most special thing in your life because you’re pigheaded.”

“It’s what’s best for Britta.”

“Hiding behind your daughter when she’s only five is a pretty lame thing to do.”

Grumbling, I folded my arms, refusing to say anything. As she drove, I clenched my eyes shut, trying to block out everything, but his face kept sweeping through my mind. His smile. The way the looks he gave me started a fire every time. I could almost feel his touch, his fingers brushing up and down my arm leaving tingling sensations. His wet kisses. His hard cock.

Oh! What was I doing to myself? This was crazy.

Even though the images came hot and heavy, I kept my eyes closed, doing everything in my power to shove the man out of my mind. With any luck, I’d see him at the funeral then he’d leave, going back to the sunny side of the world where he could roll around in his money.

“What are you going to do about getting the truck fixed? I mean, I don’t mind driving you, but I won’t be able to all the time.”

“I’ll figure something out.”

“Didn’t you say Walter left you something in his will?” Megan asked, the taunting sound of her voice obvious.

“I told that man I wouldn’t take anything, no matter what it was.”

“That man? You mean the man who you made mad passionate love with last night? That one?”

“So what if the sex was out of this world?”

“You mean that man who wants to protect you?”

“Stop it. He just wants to claim me as his possession.”

“Jesus,” she muttered, remaining quiet for a few seconds. When I heard her gasp, I refused to acknowledge it. I didn’t need to be chastised for my decision. I’d already done that enough to myself. “You mean the man who purchased you a new truck?”

“What are you talking about?” I turned my head toward her, mystified why her eyes were like saucers. Then I followed her gaze, my mouth dropping open.
