The name Stellar Investments rings a bell.

I looked them up during my search and I do another quick search now. They have branches in both Houston and Austin. They don’t list their junior employees on their website.

I would never have found her.

Her body language was hard to read. She was obviously shocked. Flustered. And conflicted.

Is she regretting taking the job?

She didn’t give me her name in Hawaii for a reason.

She lied to me about where she was from.

She left without saying goodbye.

Maybe she never wanted to see me again and now her dream job has turned into a nightmare because of me.

Fuck.

This girl has literally haunted my dreams every night since she left me.

We need to have a conversation. I need to tell her about the insider trading bullshit myself so she has all the facts. Normally I wouldn’t care about new employees overhearing rumors, but I want her to hear the truth from me directly. This feels important.

I also need to tell her that from the moment I woke up in an empty hotel bed and realized she was gone, I’ve been obsessed with finding her.

I start typing an email.

Dusty,

You are required in my office as soon as you receive this. There have been some recent developments in the company and I want to make sure you have all the facts before you begin your job.

Hayley will be expecting you and will show you in.

I let the automatic signature remain in place, resisting the urge to sign off as Ace, only because the IT people currently have fucking temporary free rein over all inter-office emails.

I consider changing the subject line but fuck it.

Twenty minutes later—and yes, I’ve spent nineteen of them pacing and waiting for the ping of my inbox because I’m completely losing my goddamn mind—I get a reply.

Mr. Maddox,

Thank you for your message. I’ve had a briefing from a few of my new colleagues, so it’ll be ace to talk it all through. I’ll be able to get to your office by 11.
