“Let them talk and get her prepared for her future life,” my father says.

“Prepared? I’m sorry, but with Vivian, is that a good idea?” I asked, aware that my sister isn’t known for being gentle.

“True, but your mother is there,” Matteo says.

“Good, because if she can keep him in check,” Alessio says, pointing to my father and then continues, “she’s got a shot with your sister.”

“A slim one,” Matteo says about his wife with a chuckle. “Now, let’s discuss this asshole we have that attacked your wife. He’s in our special place. He’s not dead, but he’s not kicking and screaming either. I’d like to deal with him after we find out what’s going on with the Morenos and that asshole cop. What happened, exactly?”

I explain what happened and then he says, “Damn, so who was she looking for in the building?”

“I don’t know. Moreno’s home is miles from the building. She had no reason to be there dressed like that and looking so fearful. She couldn’t stop looking over her shoulder.”

“Maybe there are money ties in the building. Think about it. You went there for money, and then that fucker believes his daughter stole the money we took, so there must be a money source there.”

“There is a very huge possibility. I was thinking that someone there was connected to Moreno since Sanchez was there too.”

“Now tell me what you know about the wedding deal with Morozov.”

“We heard that a wedding was to occur today between a Moreno daughter and Morozov. The Morenos owe the Morozov Bratva a hundred thousand or more, so I’m guessing she was a tradeoff. That’s probably why she was running. I thought it would be the older daughter, but I guess it was the younger one.”

“Probably the older one wasn’t as pure,” my father said. “Although knowing how the Morenos are, she’s more than likely sold off to someone else.” We stole way more than the hundred thousand dollars, so they could have taken their cut from the money.

“Damn. Well, at least you didn’t buy her,” I growl at Matteo.

He tosses his hands up apologetically. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to offend your bride.”

“She fucking hates me.”

“She doesn’t hate you, Son. Maybe she thinks you’re a dick, but not a single one of us missed that kiss. Your mother kicked me in the balls when we met.” He pinches his eyes shut and we all grunt, reaching for our sacks. That had to hurt like hell, and they’ve been in love for decades.

“Damn right. Remember, I married the viper,” Matteo adds.

“True. That’s fucking sick. You’re twisted.”

“She stole my heart, and she threatens to stab it if I ever think of betraying her. It only makes me love her more, so you have it easy. You married the reluctant enemy.” He grips my shoulder and gives it a squeeze. “Now what are we going to do about that fucking dickhead detective? He’s on the take for Moreno. I felt it, but you got proof today.”

“We can’t just drop his ass. It would be too obvious, but we can make him a problem for Moreno to take out,” Dario adds.

“Or even a problem for Morozov,” Alessio throws out.

Just hearing his name makes my blood boil. “Fuck that Russian. I want Morozov’s head.”

My father clasps his hand on my shoulder and gives it a squeeze. “In due time, Son. Remember, you can’t put a bullet in all our enemies at once. Besides, all we know is that he was offered your wife.”

“What happened to the bastard that wanted Mom?” We were told stories as we got older, and I know for a fact there were things he wouldn’t tolerate.

“Fair point, but…”

“No buts… I want his head. She’s mine, and I need to make sure everyone knows it.”

“We’ll make a formal announcement, and they will,” Matteo says.

“Sounds great, but we should be ready for another battle,” Dario adds, trying to change the subject. “Excuse me.” He moves to the corner of the room and pulls out his cell phone.

“His people aren’t ready for another war. They were decimated after the other night,” I remind everyone.

“Yes, they were, but they have allies.”
