I wasn’t in the mood to waste time. “Senator. I’m aware that your son was involved with the beautiful goddaughter of the brutal Santiago crime syndicate out of South America. I assume you know what I’m talking about.” I took a deep breath as I glanced around his stunning living room.

But not before I caught the look of shock on his face. “That was a long time ago. My son suffered tremendously because of his involvement with that… girl.”

“Yes, he was murdered for abandoning both her and his two children. Were you aware you had grandchildren?”

As I slowly turned my head, there was no way the man could appeared more shocked. “No. I was not.” He narrowed his eyes, instantly lost in thought.

“Even if you weren’t aware of them, it’s a shame you won’t be able to meet your grandson since he was murdered like Margarite was. And there was a hit put out on your granddaughter’s life recently. Since she’s become very important to me, as you might imagine, the realization pissed me the fuck off.” I allowed my voice to boom before yanking back my anger.

Michael shifted from one foot to the other.

“I apologize for my outburst. When it involves the woman I love, I become a little irrational. Don’t I, Dante?”

“Actually, you’re calmer than I would be after I learned that the people her own grandfather was working for had placed a hit on her life so that his run for president of the United States wouldn’t have a scandal attached, a horrific stigma.”

“Yes,” I mused.

“What? They wouldn’t do that.” His insistence was an affirmation that he was not only aware of the group but also involved with them.

“Well, I assure you that they won’t have another opportunity to lay a single hand on her. I’ll see to that. However, now, let’s get down to business.”

I only cared about an affirmative reaction to provide my lovely woman with additional answers. As I pulled out the envelope, I took a deep breath. “I’m certain you’ll appreciate my taste in art. Incidentally, I do so adore the design for your living room. Mine could use an update. Don’t you think, brother?”

Dante nodded as he looked around the room. “Who is your decorator? Maybe you could supply Diego with a name.”

Michael looked distressed, which was nearly satisfying. “Sure. I mean…”

“You’ll want to look at these.” I handed him the envelope, staring into his eyes until he took them from me.

I didn’t need to see the look on his face as the moment he realized I could ruin him entirely. Exhaling, I started humming to myself as I walked around the room, fingering the photograph of his legitimate grandchildren. It was too bad his daughter-in-law would lose all the support she’d received over the years, fistfuls of money to keep her quiet given her knowledge of his son’s past.

“Oh,” Michael finally said. “You can’t do this.”

“Oh, I can and I will. When you play, you pay,” I told him.

“You did get his best side, Diego,” Constantine said.

“I’m certain your constituents and your wife and daughter would find them interesting as well,” Maxim said in a much more casual voice than I was used to hearing. The man was damn good at being a chameleon.

“What the fuck do you want from me?” Michael demanded, finally reclaiming his balls for the time being.

“What do I want?” I repeated as I ran my fingers across the invisible dust on his mantel, rubbing them together when I turned my head in his direction. Then I took two long strides until I was close. “To remove you as a tool to be used by the Death Squad.”

“They’re not doing that.”

“Oh, no? I assume they’re dumping the millions of dollars into your campaign. Yes?” When he didn’t disagree with me, I pushed. “Were you aware where that money is coming from, all those millions you don’t mind spending? From the illegal sale of fentanyl. Yes, the addictive and dangerous drug. Were you aware that the pharmaceutical companies the Death Squad owns are now responsible for almost ninety percent of the overdoses that occur in this country every year?”

“I…” It was clearly another huge surprise for him. I was just full of them today. It would seem I was on a roll. When he started to shake, I patted him on the shoulder.

“Now, I plan on providing a copy of this to several of your… we’ll call them comrades in Alaska. Did you know I was lured there to try and frame me for several recent deaths? Tsk. Tsk. It’s obvious they don’t know me that well. Anyway, I digress. I’m certain they’ll get the information to the bigwigs running the secretive organization.” When I pulled out my weapon for the sheer fun of watching the man start to break down, I realized I was enjoying myself far too much. I pressed the barrel against his temple, smiling like the crazed monster I could still be.

He was shaking even more, the nervous tic on the side of his mouth driving me batty. But I’d only need to suffer the man’s presence for a few more minutes.

“You’re going to kill me,” he said, as if stating the obvious.

“I won’t if you’ll tell me who the people are in charge of the Death Squad.”

There was another moment of confusion followed by true denial. “I don’t have any idea. They’ve never divulged who they are. They simply deposited money into my account and some of their men provided me with details of what they wanted me to do, which wasn’t anything that I wasn’t already doing.”
