As I climbed into the rental vehicle, I thought about how all this had happened in the first place. I now knew who my father was and while I didn’t feel any different, at least not really, it was good to know all the details so I could try to put the past behind me.

That had all been because of a man’s love for me, something that had endured violence and danger, heartache and years apart. It was funny how it felt as if I’d known him my entire life. In a way, I had.

Now we were planning on making up for lost time.

But only after the crush of heartache was finished. It wasn’t just that one of my own had betrayed me much like his soldier had done. It was that I was about to lose a friend as well, something that would haunt me for a long time to come.

“You’re awfully quiet,” Diego said as he headed for the station.

“I know. It’s hard.”

“When someone you trust betrays you, it takes a significant amount of time to get over it. But keep in mind that all people aren’t bad.”

His words made me chuckle. “Said by someone who can’t trust anyone, a man who lives and breathes danger and violence.”

“I trust you.”

His grin was adorable. “My God. You have dimples.”

“You didn’t know that?”

“You almost never smile. You need to more often.”

There was something so cute about the way he pretended to choke. “I smile around you.”

“No, you growl. That’s different.”

He laughed and made the last turn onto the road leading to the station. For a few seconds, I thought about the horrors of thinking I was going to die when Jacob shot Ivan and forced me into his car. Three times my hero had come to my rescue. I prayed to God there wouldn’t be a fourth. I wasn’t certain I could take it.

“I love you, sweet Sabrina. I’ll ask you one last time. Are you certain you want to do this?”

“I need to look them in the eyes, or I won’t be able to close this chapter.”

“For what it’s worth, I do understand.”

“I know you do.” My life had already changed dramatically and would continue doing so but I couldn’t be happier. It was strange to be a law enforcement officer, always determined to do something good with my life because a boy who’d saved my life had made that request.

Now I was marrying him, a man who easily called himself evil.

“Do me a favor and wait here,” I told him.

“If that’s what you want.”

“Yes, this time it is but don’t go too far.”

He grabbed my hand, pulling it to his lips. “Baby. You’re never getting away from me.”

The man made me shudder. I climbed out, taking a deep breath and throwing my shoulders back. I’d even decided to wear my official uniform. It felt right. Or maybe it was a little piece of armor that could shield me from the heartache.

I knew the Death Squad would continue on, likely causing us issues in the future, but I refused to back down on living my life to the fullest.

As I walked inside, I could tell there were several relieved staff members. “Are they in the conference room?”

“They are, Sheriff. Welcome back.”

I didn’t respond. Maybe because I was trying to keep from falling into despair. I’d allow myself a few moments of that later. But not now.

As soon as I walked into the conference room, all three stood. I was taken aback by the heartache, even though I’d anticipated some of it.
