“Excuses, girl,” Jenika mused. “I knew that’s what you’d do.”

“She’s right. You started this,” Kathleen said in a singsong voice.

“You all but promised,” Ashley added.

“I’m going to kill all three of you.” I cringed deep inside but had to admit, maybe it would add a little something to the evening. “Granted, I am a pool shark.”

“Then you have nothing to worry about. What’s it going to be, girl?”

The way Ashley was pressing raised my hackles. “What the heck. You’re on.”

“Then so are you.” Jenika lifted her glass of wine, fanning her face with her other hand. “Whew, baby. Now, that’s a fine-looking piece of meat.”

Immediately stiffening, I closed my eyes briefly, taking a long swig of my beer. If Jenika was pulling my leg, I was going to kick her butt. I wouldn’t put it past her to do so.

Exhaling, I turned slightly, studying the front of the bar. The man walking in by himself was without a doubt the most breathtaking man I’d laid eyes on in a long time. He was the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome, appearing significantly taller than most men in the joint from where I was sitting. He had hair the color of the night sky, thick curls smashing against the back of his leather jacket and a jaw carved out of stone, and I found myself licking my lips involuntarily.

As he walked further into the crowded location, I could tell the girls were swooning. Even though he was dressed casually, the aura he was cloaked in screamed of superiority and privilege, two things I loathed in a man. The way he carried himself was commanding, which wasn’t lost on anyone in the crowd. I didn’t like the man and had never seen him before, but my instincts told me he was a predator.

“Earth to Sabrina. I think our girl is in love.” Jenika leaned over, blowing on my cheek.

“Not my type,” I growled in response.

“Then why are your cheeks flushed?” Kathleen cooed.

“Bullshit,” I hissed, but could feel the heat churning from deep within, the unexpected throb in my pussy disturbing.

“And don’t look now but I think he’s looking straight at you,” Ashley muttered, whistling under her breath.

“He is. Wow.”

“Very funny.” I hated the fact I was already aroused just at the sight of him. For all I knew, the obvious tourist could be a hellraiser or worse. Especially since we had a killer running loose. Oh, who was I kidding? I still believed the horrific event was gang related, the group likely long gone on one of many boats that left a few times a day.

However, my friends were right. I’d heard the old adage about locking eyes with someone across a crowded room but there was something so powerful about the connection that I was suddenly breathless. Wowzer. His nostrils flared and he slowed his step, offering the sexiest smile I’d seen in a long time.

Okay, so I was slightly flustered, which surprised the hell out of me. It had been a long time since I’d reacted this way to any man, let alone a stranger.

“That man looks like he wants to devour you,” Kathleen half whispered in her dark and far too husky voice.

“Don’t fool yourself. He’s merely thirsty,” I said in passing.

“Right, for a taste of your pussy.”

“Ashley! You’re a little bitch,” I barked, loudly enough several members of the opposite sex turned their heads in my direction.

As he headed through the bar, I was able to get a better look at him, especially since the majority of men in his way parted like the Red Sea.

“Wow. You got lucky,” Kathleen said from beside me.

“That remains to be seen.” I almost whispered my statement, swallowing as he sidled up to the bar. He appeared either bored or irritated with the clientele.

“Head to the pool table. See what happens,” Jenika suggested. Of course the table would be several feet closer. “And plan on losing.”

“That’s not going to happen.” I was suddenly no longer interested in a game of pool. I powered back another gulp of my beer, leaving the bottle on the table. I’d use getting another drink as an excuse to get closer. If he was a dog or an asshole, all bets were off. I wasn’t desperate to get laid. Oh, who was I kidding? The vibrator collection just didn’t do it for me any longer. Or maybe I’d grown weary of trying with men. Maybe I should get a dog instead. At least the pup would be loyal.

I pressed my hands against my jeans, hating the fact they were sweaty and tingling with anticipation. However, I was up to the challenge. Or so I thought.

As I moved closer to the bar, I realized he was even better looking than I’d originally thought, his long legs nestled in dark trousers, but the material was incapable of hiding his muscular physique. Covering his jaw was at least two days’ worth of dark stubble. The gorgeous shadow had the effect of adding to a dark and dangerous persona.
