“So… I have another question.” Kathleen chuckled, the tone of her voice entirely different. “Let’s talk… men.”

The fire I’d felt from the night before continued to course through me like a volcano that had awakened from a deep slumber. My analogy was on the money, which brought a smile to my face and a dull throbbing in my pussy. When I shifted again, I issued an audible groan and I heard the glitch in Kathleen’s voice was well as a slight giggle, which she never did. It would seem the arrival of the dark and mysterious man had allowed a bunch of women to do a lot of things they’d never done before.

Great.

When would this near nightmare end?

“Oh, no, you don’t,” I teased.

“Come on. You can step away from the case for a few minutes. Now that we have business under control, tell me about the big hunk of juicy meat who stole you away from us.”

“Business under control? I have a brutal murderer roaming the streets of Sitka and you want to talk about some stranger?”

“Stranger, huh? Oh, that is mysterious and deliciously hot. Details, girlfriend. I want details.”

Since when had the perfunctory woman ever talked like this? “There’s nothing to tell.”

“Right. And I’m suddenly a six-foot-tall Amazon with men leering at me wherever I go. Come on. Get real. You should have seen the way that man looked at you, as if he was going to devour you whole. I assume that’s what he did.”

“Maybe so but that didn’t mean I fell head over heels for him.”

“Really? You’re talking to me here. There was no denying the spark between the two of you.”

“Maybe so but I can’t get involved with anyone. Besides, he’s an out of towner.”

“So what?” Kathleen barked. “So were we once. Maybe he’s here for a few weeks or months. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy him more than once. I mean he is scrumptious. At least admit that. Come on. Do it. It will make you feel so damn good.”

She had me laughing, which I needed after second guessing myself ten times over. “Okay, he’s hot but that can’t matter.”

“You’re a terrible liar. Please tell me you got his number, or he got yours.”

“Nope. We called it a night and that’s that.”

“My God, woman. What am I going to do with you?”

Sighing, when I heard a light tapping on my closed office door, I welcomed the interruption instead of hating it like I usually did. “Look. I made a mistake. I really don’t want to talk about it.”

“Uh-huh. I’ll get it out of you eventually.”

“I need to go back to work.”

“Party pooper.”

I motioned for Damon, determined to get back to the business at hand. I had to shove Diego out of my mind. “I’ll talk to you later.” I hung up the phone, hating the case more than any I’d experienced in my entire career. Plus, I had a bad feeling Damon was about to drop another bomb.

“What’s up?” I asked, sitting back in my chair. “Please tell me you’ve at least identified our victim.”

“Not yet, but Carlos Deposito is supposedly back in town tomorrow. There’s something else I wanted to bring your attention to,” Damon answered, a pensive look on his face.

“Okay, what is it?”

“You had me running down all the recent boats coming into the area.”

“And?”

“There’s a cruise ship arriving tomorrow.”

I rubbed my eyes, hating the fact the two cups of coffee had done nothing. “That’s not unusual.”
