By the time I lifted and focused the instrument, the car had sped up enough I couldn’t make out the plate. “Damn it.”

I glanced at the ominous sky, a storm rolling in. There was more of a chill in the air than normal, the darkened skies adding to my souring mood.

Another sickening feeling tore through me.

Something very bad was soon to happen. I would bet my career on it.

Diego

“Interesting,” I muttered as I used my iPhone to take a picture of the license plate of the dark sedan that had passed by the parking lot slowly not one but twice. It was something apparently the object of my affection hadn’t managed to do given her reaction seconds before. I immediately sent it to Jacob to research. With the darkened windows, it was possible the vehicle wasn’t a rental at all. But anyone of any competence in my business certainly wouldn’t allow a member of law enforcement or another syndicate to capture their identity and possibly their location that easily.

Still, maybe it was possible I’d get lucky.

After hitting send on the email, I stuffed my phone back into my jacket, turning my full attention to the beautiful woman standing on the side of the road.

Not all law enforcement officers in a small town wore uniforms, but they usually drove cars indicating their affiliation with whatever agency they were with. That was the case with the lovely, very feisty Sheriff Sabrina Rose, her name alone provoking the beast inside of me. I took a deep breath, tapping my fingers on the steering wheel as I studied her from the SUV where I remained.

She couldn’t see me. I was the master of hiding in plain sight, especially when I was determined to learn everything I could about a person.

I hadn’t needed to be close to know the encounter she’d had with the reporter had been a terse one, which meant she had no interest in talking with reporters. But if I had to venture a guess, I’d say Brandy Martin’s determination to get an interview meant the information on the murder had been accurate. That would require a small change in plans, but not until I went to the meeting with the dealer Ivan had found.

A second boat had been purposely hidden on the private island, which allowed for comings and goings without prying eyes. I had no intention of hindering my escape route or providing anyone with an opportunity to take me by surprise.

Like I had plans on doing with the lovely sheriff.

She’d been spying on me, including using binoculars. That either meant someone had tipped her off to who I was or she’d already known. The only reason I didn’t buy the latter was because I’d entered the bar after her. Still, she knew something, and she would talk. One way or the other.

I waited until she’d left the small parking lot before heading from where I’d parked.

I’d easily found her address, which surprised me. While I doubted Sitka was a hot bed of crime, other than the possibility of a recent murder, that didn’t mean a single woman shouldn’t be very careful. Especially given her position. There were far less reputable men than me who enjoyed the thought of torturing a female law enforcement officer prior to ending their lives.

Fortunately for her, I wasn’t one of those men.

That didn’t mean I wouldn’t use her as I pleased, helping her understand that she would learn to follow my rules, or she would be punished in unfathomable ways.

I had an hour to kill and longed to learn everything I could about her. As I drove to her house, I allowed my thoughts to wander to why I felt so connected to her. There was no specific reason for the electricity we’d shared other than the obvious physical attraction we’d both felt. But there was more. Maybe I appreciated a rebellious woman more than I used to or than I’d thought I could.

Whatever the reason, it had been a long time since I’d felt this aroused by anyone. I drove in complete silence, forced to shift my cock in my trousers more than once. I also kept watch on the rearview mirror, although I doubted she had plans on returning home any time soon. She had far too much work to do.

Finding her house wasn’t as easy as I’d anticipated, yet discovering it was in the middle of the woods was a true bonus. That meant the time I intended on spending with her wouldn’t be interrupted. As I parked, a grin crossed my face. She had simple tastes, the A-frame exactly what I would have expected.

I glanced into the rearview mirror once again before cutting the engine then climbing out, grabbing the small utility bag I’d brought with me. I always traveled with certain implements for use in stern punishments and interrogations as well as those that could help me gain entrance into any locked facility.

My well-paid hackers had even developed a small handheld device that allowed for the shutdown of almost every security system in the business. It would seem I’d moved into the next century after all. Smirking, I headed toward the manicured exterior, studying the small home. While I’d called it mostly a typical A-frame complete with all glass on the ‘A’ portion, there was a two-story portion jutting out on the side. I could see straight through to the back, including a large stone fireplace. The area included a cathedral ceiling living room and kitchen with a small eating area. It would seem the bedrooms were located in the wing.

As I walked around to the side, I scanned the area. With it being early spring, only some of the leaves were on the trees. However, there were no other buildings within eyesight.

Another plus.

I walked around the entire exterior. I could hear running water coming from the back of her property, likely an indication of a river or other body of water. I made mental note of it before heading back to the front. At least the woman was cautious enough to keep her blinds in the bedrooms closed when she wasn’t home. Good girl.

The landscaping out back was also manicured yet the shrubs were inexpensive hedges able to survive the odd weather the area had. An octagon-shaped gazebo was positioned twenty yards away, but given the lack of furniture, it didn’t appear as if it was used on a regular basis.

As I headed up the three stairs leading to the front door, pulling out the small pick required for the lock, I glanced at the two Adirondack chairs on the oversized front porch, a single pot of wilted flowers in the middle. I had a feeling she had few visitors.

The lock on the all glass door was more formidable than I’d anticipated but I was inside in under two minutes, shutting the door behind me. As soon as I took a step further inside, I had to say I was more than impressed with the light wooden floors and comfortable yet inexpensive furniture. However, everything was neat and tidy from pillows placed diagonally by the arms of the couch to the kitchen towels positioned just so on the handle of the smoked glass stove.

Also just as I would have expected.
