I closed my eyes as the moment of intimacy continued, fighting to shut down my emotions as he’d done to his. Exhaustion remained, the need for sleep overwhelming. When he finally pulled away, I took shallow breaths, rubbing the tips of my fingers across his naked chest. I was shocked how the touch of his skin seared mine, the burning embers quickly becoming white-hot flames. I curled my fingers, turning my head away from him.

“When can I go home?” I asked, although I already knew the answer.

“That’s not going to happen. Not now. Not ever.”

“You can’t do that to me. I have a life.” I made the statement again as if repeating myself would do anything, He was making good on a promise from before, claiming me as his possession.

He chuckled as if what I was saying was ridiculous. “I can and I will. I’ll keep you locked inside this room if that’s what it takes to keep you safe.”

“You can’t do that.” I snapped my head back so I could show him the anger in my eyes. “I won’t let you.”

“I can do anything I want. We’re in my world now.” He sat back on his haunches, the slight smirk on his face as if he’d won this round.

“Your world?” I jerked the covers up to my neck, fighting the myriad emotions even harder. Hate. Anger. Lust. Love. They were all tangled together, churning in my mind and for the life of me, I couldn’t determine which was stronger or the one that I should pay attention to. Nothing made any sense.

The scent of him was so sensual, the wave of lightheadedness continuing because of that alone.

His upper lip curled and he allowed his eyes to fall to the way my hands were clenched around the sheets. “Yes, Sabrina. My world is entirely different than yours but here I can protect you.”

“From whom?”

“That is something I will determine.”

“What if you don’t?”

“Don’t underestimate me, Sabrina. Those who make that mistake learn the hard way I get what I want.”

I was terrified to ask what he wanted because I already knew.

All of me.

My total surrender to the man and his dangerous world.

“They’re powerful,” I said.

“You seem to think you understand what’s going on.” He tipped his head, studying me carefully.

“Maybe. I just…” I wasn’t prepared to trust him even enough to tell him what little I did know.

“Make no mistake, Sabrina. We will talk and you will share with me everything you know or think you do.”

While I wasn’t certain I could ever be able to consider him an ally, I realized I didn’t have a choice. As he tried to lower the sheet, I tightened my hold, shaking my head. “Don’t do this. I can’t. I won’t. You and I are just…”

There’d once been so much passion and depth in his steel gray eyes but the absence of light continued to increase. Now the enraged lion could barely contain his anger.

He stood slowly, remaining tense as if the weight of the world was on his shoulders.

Something shattered inside of me and I rolled over, doing everything I could to ignore the tether karma had insisted remain. “Go away.”

There was no movement, no sound of any kind except for the continuing rapid beating of my heart. Whether or not he was angry with me, frustrated or disappointed, I didn’t know and right now, I couldn’t care. I needed time to think and process.

To plan.

And maybe to figure out a way to escape. But to where? Where would I ever be safe from the monsters chasing me or the man who would hunt me, committed to claiming me as his own?

Seconds later, he padded toward the door, his bare feet thudding heavily against the hardwood floor. I shifted my head without making any noise, able to see him standing in the doorway, his white-knuckled fingers wrapped around the door handle. His chest rose and fell in a steady pattern, his jaw clenched.

“You need your rest, mi hermosa flor. But make no mistake. You belong to me and after this moment, you will never reject me again.” With that, he slammed the door.
