“Why should I?”

“You mean other than I saved your life and will do so again if necessary? Then because the people who hired the suicide assassin to attack you will attempt it again. Here. There. It won’t matter. They are well connected. That’s become painfully obvious.”

“So you’re admitting you took my iPad.”

“Yes, my seductive beauty,” he repeated in English. “It was necessary given I was uncertain how long you would be under the influence of the drug you were given. It’s good to see you’re feeling better as obvious by your defiance.”

God help me, I wanted to wipe the smirk off his face. “I want so much to hate you.”

“But you can’t. We’re drawn to each other.”

“Like moths to a flame.”

“Why don’t you make it easy on the men I tasked to hack your code and tell me what it is and what you were working on?”

I tried to roll over to ignore him, but he wouldn’t allow it, pulling me onto my back once again. The moment I attempted to slap him, he easily snagged my hand inches from his face, tsking as his eyes flashed. “I don’t think you want another spanking. Now, do you?”

Fear of the unknown was fueling my need to behave badly, even if everything about the man was irresistible and he was right that we needed to work together. When he wrapped his fingers around mine, pulling my hand to his lips, I bit my lower lip to keep from moaning.

“All sixes,” I said quickly before I changed my mind.

“Not very secure. A very bad girl,” he growled.

“It’s not something I thought I had to worry about. And I was working on whether there was a connection between the various people who died from overdoses. I think there are clues in there as to who might be involved with the Death Squad. If I can make a connection then it might provide a path to their plans.”

“A very good idea.” He pulled out his phone, his eyes barely flitting to his screen as he texted something, obviously to whichever goon was working on invading my world and my life. When he was finished, he tossed it onto the table near the plush leather chair. I was surprised he wasn’t carrying a weapon. Maybe he was concerned I would use it on him.

The thought had crossed my mind but who was I kidding? I wouldn’t stand a chance without his protection. And I hated it.

“They killed her,” I told him in a whispered voice.

“Who are you talking about?”

“That reporter. My deputy called just before I walked into my house. They killed her because she was trying to expose members of the Death Squad.” I studied his expression, a feeling of sickness pooling in my stomach.

His eyes dimmed as he nodded. “Undoubtedly. From what I know about the group, they will stop at nothing to ensure their secrecy and privacy. That makes them even more dangerous. You trust your deputies?”

“Why is it that everyone keeps asking me that? Of course I do.” But did I? My thoughts drifted to the various pieces of evidence, the odd phone calls and interactions and I shuddered.

“Because often those we’re closest to are those most likely to betray us, sweet Sabrina. Don’t be naïve. Whatever is going on in Alaska and beyond, there’s an entire network of people providing assistance in one way or another.”

He was right.

There was no chance I could trust anyone any longer.

Perhaps that terrified me more than anything else.

Now I was putting what little trust I did have into a real-life monster.

And because of that I was able to feel safe.

If there was such a thing any longer.

CHAPTER 24

Sabrina

“We will finish our discussion, Sabrina, but not now. I am far too hungry for further discussion.”
