I had no idea what to believe any longer or who I was, but I wasn’t going to spend the rest of my life embroiled in some rich man’s game.

No matter who that man was.

I was allowed to storm upstairs without being followed. I slammed the door, but he’d taken the opportunity to switch the lock to the outside of the door for his convenience. I had no doubt I’d only have but so much time by myself until I was hassled.

After turning on a light, I continued fuming. I hated the man. I hated this situation. I… As I paced the floor, keeping my arms crossed over my chest, I was forced to face the fact I didn’t hate Diego. How could I? He wasn’t to blame. He was my protector. My hero.

The only man I could see myself with.

I glanced at the dresser, eyeing my phone. However, I needed to deal with the situation my way. Someone had once said the truth would set me free. Instead, it had shoved me into a dark prison. I would solve this riddle myself. And there was only one person that could help me at this point.

Taking long strides, I yanked the phone into my hands, realizing they were shaking. As I dialed Kathleen’s number, I prayed to God she was there. She could help me arrange to get back to Alaska.

“Oh, my God,” Kathleen exclaimed, answering the phone on the second ring. “I’ve been worried sick about you. There were signs of a struggle at your house and Brandy was murdered. What the hell is going on? Where have you been?”

“I was rescued then kidnapped. I’m in San Diego with Diego Santos. He’s my captor.”

“Wait a minute. The notorious crime boss out of LA?”

“Yes. I know you have a lot of questions, but I don’t have much time. I need you to try and get me a plane ticket back to Alaska. I’ll find a way to get to the airport.”

“Okay, I can do that. I’ll text you the information. Are you in danger?”

“Yes. No. Maybe. Someone is trying to kill me based on what I know about the deaths in Sitka. It’ll blow the city wide open, but I need to finish gathering evidence.”

“What are you talking about?” she asked.

I glanced at the door, ensuring it was still closed. “Let’s just say the mayor, the judge, and several councilmen are involved in the Death Squad.”

“Oh, Jesus Christ. You’re kidding me.”

“I wish I were. This has to stay between you and me. There’s someone helping them with the murders.”

“That’s why…” she whispered.

“Why what?”

“I can’t believe I have to tell you this, but DNA from Damon was found on Brandy’s body, under her fingernails. She managed to scratch her killer before she died.”

Oh. My. God.

How had I not known? “Shit.”

“What do you want me to do with the information?”

“Nothing. I’ll take care of it when I return. Try and get the tickets for late tomorrow or the next morning out of LA. I’ll figure out the rest.”

“I’m worried about you. This is crazy.”

“Yeah, it is. I’ll be alright. I can handle myself.” It was about to get crazier, but I was ready to handle this my way.

No one was going to threaten me again.

Diego

Family.

Dante had allowed me to realize that more than anything, family was important. It was the backbone of any powerful man or woman. A family could add strength and love to your life, comfort and support when needed, which could allow even a bastard like me to thrive. To flourish in whatever endeavors I wanted to excel in.
