“What about the pregnancy? Is it true?”

“No, I’m not pregnant. The test came back negative, okay?”

I should have been filled with relief, but anger over everything that had happened washed over me instead. “If you had told me in the car, then I wouldn’t have stopped at that drugstore.”

“What? Why not?”

“Because I knew we were being followed! Now it’s all over social media that I knocked you up!”

Isabella threw her hands up in the air, in frustration or anger, I’m not sure which.

“Whoever is following me would have taken the pictures regardless of where I purchased the stupid test.”

“Either way, now I gotta deal with this fucking rumor.”

“Seriously, Blade? How about I upload a picture of the negative pregnancy test and tag you in the pictures? Will that protect your precious ego?”

Now she was hitting me where it hurt. “You don’t know what it’s like to be me.”

“What are you talking about?”

I sat down on Emily’s bed, directly across from her. “A recruiter for the California Lions is meeting with me this week. It’ll probably be my only chance at joining the best football team in the fucking nation.”

“Yeah, like this rumor will stop you from getting recruited. It’s just football, Blade.”

I ignored her subtle dig and brought up something else instead, arching a brow. “Did you do all of this on purpose?”

“What are you talking about?”

I stood up and began pacing again, dragging a finger along the temple of my forehead. “Come on, Isabella. You’ve wanted a baby since you were a teenager. I’ve seen the ultrasound on your cell phone from when you were seventeen.”

“Are you seriously suggesting that I was trying to get pregnant?”

“I don’t see why I wouldn’t think that way after you seduced me that night after the big football game.”

Isabella practically flung herself off the bed.

“First of all, how dare you even suggest that. The last fucking thing I want right now is a baby.”

“Well, forgive me for thinking the worst. I swear Isabella, part of me thinks that all you wanna do is ruin my reputation.”

She rolled her eyes before drying them with tissues.

“Your reputation is The Bedroom King, not the guy who knocked up Isabella Dayton. You could get married, have twenty children, and that nickname is going to follow you for the rest of your life. All the people that have known you in college will never let it go.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing.” She sighed. “Look, I’m sure the recruiter will still want to sign you because you’re good at football.”

And there it was.

Isabella would never settle for a guy like me in a million years, even though my family had plenty of money too. She had been groomed so early on in her life that the thought of downgrading to a jock elicited a physical reaction.

I refused to bypass this issue. “No, go back to that comment. You’ve always thought that you were better than me, haven’t you?”

“Let’s not do this right now. If you’re seriously worried about not getting recruited because of those pictures, then I’ll help you squash them, okay?”

She folded her arms in front of me, refusing to move.
