Most of all, he wasn’t Jason. He didn’t have Jason’s parents watching over me like a hawk. He didn’t come with the same baggage that’d been drowning me for as long as I could remember. He exuded confidence and danger, and yeah, never mind, he was fucking weird.

I watched him carefully as I began to zone out, my head plopping backwards. I hoped that when I came to that he would be gone.

Beside me, a gathering of girls tried to figure out what to do with me, though I couldn’t make out any of their faces. At least they attempted to look out for me.

“She needs some fresh air.”

“What are we gonna do? Lay her out on the grass?”

“No, let’s get her upstairs and into bed with the window cracked open.”

My body went limp as they pulled me up off the couch and walked me across the living room. I put one foot on the steps and suddenly decided that I was fine on my own. It was probably the alcohol speaking, but I was confident I could do it on my own. “I got it from here. Thank you.”

With my eyes squinted, I climbed the stairs one at a time. Each step was more difficult than the last, but I ascended the treacherous stairway without breaking my neck. My bedroom was the third one on the left, and the last thing I wanted was someone babysitting me all night. I’d already made an ass out of myself and didn’t need to add to the embarrassment.

No sooner did my foot hit the top step than that same guy from downstairs spoke up. “I got you, baby.”

There was no strength in me to fend him off. My body hunched forward as he caught me in his arms, placing his hand on my hip as he helped me down the hallway.

The same cologne that aroused me earlier was now making me nauseous.

“I’m going to take care of you.”
