‘‘They sent a couple of people to monitor you, but I’m assuming the FBI will be on the case as well. It’s a matter of time before our building is swamped with cops.’’

I licked my bottom lip. ‘‘That means that if he wants to do something to either of us, he’ll have to do it tonight, or tomorrow

night, at the latest. We have to make a run for it.’’

‘‘And then what?’’ She snorted. ‘‘Live in hiding and pray that he gets caught?’’

‘‘I don’t know!’’

I sat down on the nearest bench, clenching the handle of the small knife in my pocket. I was more worried about Sierra’s wellbeing. Somehow, I didn’t think he’d kill me. Not immediately, at least. It was something I had to take a risk on, since I couldn’t endanger Sierra further.

And that very same night, I made a decision.

Sierra and I had our bagels and ate them at the bakery. It managed to take our minds off that man for a brief moment, and although it didn’t last, it felt good. When we returned home, I asked her to sleep in her room tonight, and she didn’t question me further.

Once I made sure that she was asleep, I packed a bag, filled it with necessities, all the letters he wrote to me, my personal items and left. It took all of me not to break, not to back down, but in order for her to remain safe, I had to leave.

I’d always thought of myself as someone who was smart.

This whole situation proved otherwise. I kept making one bad decision after the other, and I couldn’t stop. All of me told me that Sierra’s decision was smart. If I had gone instead, they would’ve put me into a witness protection program, or at least provided security.

It just goes to show that I was just as insane as him.

I had no sense of direction. I had enough money to purchase a plane ticket and to keep me afloat for a couple of months. But leaving this godforsaken town meant throwing away the life I struggled to build, and that thought made my heart ache.

I found myself at a train station, a few miles away from Sierra’s apartment.

The night was quite peaceful.

White spread for as far as I could see. The streetlight made it shimmer, made it more charming. It wasn’t too cold, nor windy. It was a perfect night. It gave me some peace and quiet I longed for, and although I was petrified to my bones, I no longer had the strength to fight it.

‘‘What a wonderful sight.’’

I jumped a little bit.

It was past two in the morning, and this place was vacant. I swallowed a knot that formed in my throat, feeling myself slowly start to sweat. The knife was still in my pocket, and I held on to it like my life depended on it — and on some levels, it did.

I felt the person sit down next to me, and goosebumps tugged on my skin. I could barely breathe, barely think. That night, a part of me died. I was no longer the same person, and the longer I stared right ahead, the longer this person's eyes were focused on me.

Like I’d been set on fire, and he’d lit the match, I couldn’t move. It burned into my skin, yet I had no way out. There are no excuses — this was the path I chose.

‘‘It would’ve been better if you hadn’t shown up.’’

It took him a moment to realize that I spoke to him.

Then, he laughed.

It sent chills down my spine. Vicious laughter. It resembled ones I’d heard in movies when villains got their way. It was terrifying, but I remembered why I was doing this, then tried to collect myself and remain as calm as possible.

‘‘That wounds me, deeply.’’ His voice was very low, rough. ‘‘But it’s quite alright, you’ll change your mind soon enough.’’

My head whipped to the side, eyes slightly widened. His grin grew at the sight of terror in my gaze.

I didn’t realize just how close he was sitting next to me.

All I saw was that taunting, almost mocking grin of his. His gaze deepened the more I stared at him. A few strands of his hair fell over his eyes, yet I could perfectly see the hunger in them. Almost as if he’d been waiting for this moment his whole life, until he found his perfect prey.

‘‘What do you want from me?’’ It came out as a whisper, and a lone tear slipped down my cheek.
