“Muse, it’s not true. Hey, you know how many people love you just the way you are, right?”

“Don’t remind me. I feel horrible for ruining this day for your mom, and Cat, and Lola.”

“It’s not about them, sweetheart. So you have a problem with the big wedding, is that it? You don’t have doubts about us?”

“Gino, how could I ever doubt us? I know how much you love me, baby, and what you did for me. With my father? With the other three men…”

“Muse, you don’t owe me anything. Sweetheart, why didn’t you just say something before? When we were planning?”

“It’s stupid, I know. I shouldn’t be complaining.”

“Yes, you should. Muse, it’s your wedding. I’m just asking why you didn't say you didn’t want all of this. We could have made it good.”

“Catherinelle was so exciting to plan this grand wedding and so was your mother. You’re her son, of course she wants the best for you. And your grandfather? Last time we went to Napoli, he only spoke about how many people will talk about the wedding of the mighty Gino Nucci. I didn’t want to disappoint them, that’s all. Or you. I really didn’t want to disappoint you.” He was the Don, and I wanted to do right by him.

He shook his head and tucked my hair behind my ear.

“My beautiful, sweet girl. You don’t get it, do you? You could never disappoint me, Muse. All I want is to make you smile. If you would have told me you want a small, private wedding, I would have been more than happy to give you that.”

Everyone was excited to see me marry Don Gino Nucci, the powerful mafia boss, but I was marrying just Gino. This amazing man that was always so good to me; my heart was weakened by what he made me feel.

“I was stupid, I know, and now I’ve ruined everything. Look at me.”

“I am. You are more beautiful than you’ve ever been.”

“Gino, my mascara is running down and my hair is a mess.”

“Sweetheart,” He touched my cheek delicately “You’re all dressed in white. I’ve never been happier to see you.”

“Ugh, and you’ve seen my dress. I ruined everything! What are we going to do?”

“We,” He kissed me and smiled like nothing had happened, “are going to leave.”

“What?”

“Yeah, we’re going to elope. We’re just going to Mom’s church in Great Neck. The priest there owes me a few favors for some very generous donations. He will be more than happy to marry us. It will be just you and I there, sweetheart.”

“Gino, we can’t.”

“Wanna bet? You forget, Muse, that I am Don Gino Nucci, and I can do whatever the hell I want.” He kissed me again, this time lingering on my lips, making me promises of unmeasurable pleasures. “And all I want, sweetheart, is to make you happy.”

“What about all the people?”

“We’ll apologize tonight at the reception. I want to see who has the guts to object to my decisions. What do you say, sweetheart? Wanna run away with me?”

He gave me his hand and I took it, and we just walked out of there together. Gino didn’t look back or stop to give anyone an explanation about what was going on and I knew that I should feel bad, but I couldn’t. I was on my way to marrying the man of my life.

We were in such a hurry, Gino almost knocked down Ignazio in the foyer of the house.

“Boss, I see everything turned out ok.”

“Yeah, change of plans. Muse and I want to go and get married now, just us, and we’ll meet everyone later for the party. Can you coordinate?”

“I…” He looked at me and I gave him a weak smile. “Yes. Umm, boss, no one else is coming? Your grandfather?”

“Nah, Ignazio.”

“Can I,” he stopped and loosened his tie, “I know this is a lot to ask, but can I come and maybe walk Muse down the aisle? I know it’s a lot to ask and I have no right.”
