“I don’t know. The attraction is very powerful, I don’t know how to explain it. It’s like nothing I’ve ever felt before. And he makes me feel…” How do you even put that into words? How do you explain that just a touch of a person can rearrange the colors of your whole world? “It’s not just sex.”

“Good. Then go thank him for helping you tonight. He’s probably getting all crazy.”

“Katja, I can’t. If Alexei gets up and looks for me…”

“I’ll tell him I’m sick and you went you to the pharmacy, so come back with some ibuprofen. I’ll text you.”

“I can’t.”

“Go, Ludmila. I meant what I said earlier. Enzo could have taken me to his place tonight, but he turned me down. He never looks at other women, and trust me they try to get his attention. Enzo wants you, you want him, and now you have a window.”

My heart started to beat faster, making a hollow sound in my chest. I really wanted to see Enzo too. I’d been craving his touch ever since I got out of the car and I saw him standing there, looking at me and only at me.

“I don’t think I can. Katja, we’ve already been too careless.”

“No, you haven’t. I wouldn’t have found out if it wasn’t for his reaction tonight. For a second, he looked at Dad, I don’t know, like he was the other man. It was intense.”

“You really think Alexei won’t wake at all.”

“I told you I have everything covered.”

“And what about you? I don’t want you to get hurt because Enzo and I…” What? Because we were lovers, and she couldn’t have him?

“I’ll be fine. There’s no tragedy, really. I don’t get out of the house much; of course, I misread the situation. He’s the only guy who has paid any attention to me since we came to New York.”

“You should go live your own life.”

“This is a discussion for another time. Go now. Use the back door.” She grabbed my hand, pulling me to the door.

“Katja, I don’t know where he lives.”

“His house is in the suburbs, close to Long Beach. He texted me the address once when I took a cab to his place. I’ll forward it to you when you’re in the car.”

Before I knew what I was doing I was behind the wheel of the jeep, tapping on the screen on the dashboard to find Enzo’s Street on the navigation. It was a long drive, but because it was after midnight, the streets were empty, and I got to his house pretty fast. When I pulled to the gate, I looked for an intercom, but instead of finding one, a man I’d never seen before appeared and tapped on my window.

“Can I help you, miss?”

“Umm, sorry. I think I have the wrong place. I was looking for Enzo Nucci.”

“He didn’t say someone’s coming. Let me give him a call.” The man pulled out his cell phone and took it to his ear. “Hey boss, you have a visitor. I know, I know, but it’s a woman,” he stopped and looked at me, “a pretty one. I don’t know, give me a second. Miss, what’s your name?”

I took a deep breath.

“Ludmila.”

I don’t know what Enzo said at the other end of the phone call, but the man’s face sobered.

“Yes, boss. I’ll open the gate right now.” He did as he said and let me in. Enzo was already at the front door when I parked the car. He came to me as soon as I stepped out of the car.

“Ludmila.”

I didn’t answer, I just jumped in his arms.

“Take me inside.”

“Are you ok, baby doll?”

“Yes, I just wanted to see you.”
