“I thought he had nothing to do with the rig since his heart attack,” I said more in passing.

The brute’s laugh was chilling. “Do you think a man like Sean is going to rest and take care of himself? He had regular phone meetings with a couple of the guys.”

“Including Declan,” I huffed.

He nodded. “Yep.”

“So he put all your lives in jeopardy, including Rylee’s, to try and save face?” Jack’s growl matched my mood. What Sean had done was reckless.

“Declan was a piece of work but Mr. O’Rourke listened to him. He trusted the man completely,” Cormac insisted. “At one time, so did the rest of the crew. Something happened to the man about five months ago. Been acting fucking wacko ever since. Cagey. Keeping secrets.”

“Any idea why?”

“None. I asked him a couple of times, but Declan just acted like it was none of my business. He and I even got into a couple fights about it.”

“Why didn’t Rylee fire him earlier?” Jack asked.

“Because of what we told her.”

Jack narrowed his eyes. “Maybe that’s a good thing.”

“What’s really going on here?’ Cormac intervened.

Adding people to the string of information wasn’t in our best interest until we really knew what we were dealing with. “The three of us need to trust you, Cormac. But right now, the best thing to do is to keep a few things in the dark.”

Snorting, Cormac seemed to accept what I’d said. “I ain’t stupid, Foxx. Declan and Mr. O’Rourke have gotten themselves mixed up with some bad dudes. I don’t like it.”

“Neither do I.”

“So you know,” Jack continued. “Together, Cormac and I found some other things of concern, some of them recent.”

“How recent?”

“A couple days.”

I glanced at Cormac. “Is it possible someone got on this rig without you knowing?”

Cormac shrugged. “Yeah, maybe. At least right now it is since we’re running the midnight crew. There’s barely any of us here for the big rig. If that person or persons used a boat and came on board in the middle of the night, they could do a lot of damage. Too many places to hide.”

“Can you get some of your men to search the sites you know about?”

Cormac finally acted as if he realized we could be sitting ducks in the water. “Yeah, sure. You really think we have a saboteur on board?”

Jack chortled. “I think it’s possible. You saw what I did. A line was cut maybe twenty-four hours before. A few valves set to blow when pressure was added. All easy crap to sweep through and do. All it would take was knowledge of the easiest places to hit.”

“Okay. I’ll need a personal rundown of the men currently residing on the rig.” My statement wasn’t met with anger as I’d suspected it would be.

“I can do that, but I can also vouch for all the men working with me. I handpicked them.”

While I appreciated Cormac’s confidence in the guys he worked with, I didn’t know him from Adam. And his name hadn’t stood out when I’d looked over the employee list.

I noticed Rylee headed in our direction and nodded toward Jack. “Go talk to her. Keep her away for now. I’ll be right there.”

Jack’s nostrils flared. “Alright. But we’re not lying to her.”

I wanted to say like I knew she was doing with us, but I refused to make the waters any muddier. Besides, the way I felt about the girl was only increasing. It wasn’t just about my strange need to protect or seduce her. I wanted more. It was driving me crazy. “Fine. Then the four of us are going to talk. Hopefully Hudson learned some things.”

“Yeah, I hear what you’re saying.” Jack walked off, leaving Cormac staring at me.
