But just as our lips are about to meet, reality comes crashing in. With great effort, I pull back at the last moment, breaking the spell that has enveloped us.

“We shouldn’t do this.” My chest is heavy with regret. “We need to stick to our ground rules, Lily. It’s the only way to protect both of us.”

She nods in understanding, though I can see the disappointment flicker in her eyes. It’s too much to bear, and I stand and look away.

“I can show you to your quarters?—”

“No.” She stands as well. “Thank you. I’ll ask a servant to do it for me.”

She strides past me, leaving me standing alone and defeated in one of the most beautiful spots on earth.

CHAPTER 19

LILY

It’s a beautiful day in Albavarre as Felix and I make our way down a cobblestone street in the heart of the city. It’s our last full day here, and I feel a twinge of sadness at the thought of leaving. This past week has been a whirlwind of events and dinners with Felix’s parents, and today is our only chance to truly explore the city together.

“Come on.” Felix grabs my hand as we turn a corner onto a bustling street.

The scent of fresh bread and pastries wafts through the air, drawing us toward a small bakery tucked between two other shops.

“Is this the famous bakery you’ve been telling me about?” I ask, excitement bubbling inside me.

“Indeed, it is,” he replies with a grin. “Their croissants are to die for.”

We enter the bakery, where we’re greeted by a warm atmosphere and the sound of laughter from the patrons inside. As we approach the counter, I see rows of delectable treats lined up behind the glass display case — flaky croissants, succulent fruit tarts, and delicate macarons.

Felix turns to me. “What would you like?”

“Everything looks so amazing. You pick. You know best.”

“Two almond croissants, please,” Felix says.

I can hardly contain my excitement as the server wraps the croissants up in parchment paper for us to take away. I’ve never considered myself much of a foodie, but all of the dishes in Albavarre are so amazing that it’s hard not to become obsessed with food.

As we step back outside, I take a bite of my croissant, savoring the rich, buttery layers of pastry. “This is divine.”

Felix chuckles at my enthusiasm. “I knew you’d love it.”

We continue walking, passing by various shops and vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry to colorful textiles. Eventually, we come across a flower stand filled with vibrant blooms.

“Would you like some flowers?” Felix is already studying the display.

I hesitate. Flowers are always nice to have, but his buying me some is such a romantic gesture. Is he sure he wants to do that?

The vendor is looking at me expectantly, though, and I don’t want to let her down.

“Sure.” I finger the petals closest to me.

After picking out a bouquet of stunning pink peonies, we continue on our way. Every block has something new to see, and even though I’m enthralled, my heart is also sinking at the thought of leaving Albavarre behind.

As we stroll through the streets, I notice that people seem to recognize Felix. Some call out his name excitedly, while others simply wave as we pass by. A few brave souls even approach him for pictures, and he graciously obliges.

“Wow.” I shake my head. “I had no idea you were so…”

“What?” He stuffs his hands into his pockets as we walk.

“Beloved,” I say, for lack of a better word.
