There’s a beat of silence, the air thick with shock and unspoken questions.

“Are you sure?” He almost sounds confused.

“Positive. Actually, multiple positives. I took three tests, and you’re the only person who could be the father.”

“Okay.” He exhales, and I can almost see the gears turning in his head. “We’ll move the wedding date up. We can’t have a child out of wedlock. It would be a scandal.”

His response is efficient, practical, and completely devoid of emotion. I’d hoped for more from him — excitement, perhaps, or even a hint of happiness about our unexpected news.

“Right,” I agree, my voice wavering as disappointment washes over me. “We’ll do that.”

“Good. I’ll start making the arrangements. Talk to you later.” And then he’s gone, leaving me with an ache in my chest that feels like more than just morning sickness.

As I hang up the phone, Meg reaches over and takes my hand, squeezing it gently. “How are you feeling?” she asks, her eyes searching mine for any sign of distress.

“Confused,” I admit, my thoughts a whirlwind of emotion. “I thought he might be… I don’t know. Happier?”

“Give him time. This is a lot to process, for both of you. He’s probably in shock.”

“Maybe,” I concede, but deep down, I can’t help but feel the sting of rejection. I have the prince and the baby, everything I should want in life, so why does it feel like there’s still something missing?

I know the answer. I want Felix’s heart to be mine, and that’s not possible. It’s my biggest dream, one I never knew I had.

And one I’ll never achieve.

CHAPTER 22

FELIX

I sit in an armchair in the rental house’s living room, clutching a whiskey I haven’t touched. It’s been hours since Lily told me about the pregnancy, and I still can’t wrap my head around it. I feel empty and confused, like a ship lost at sea.

I wish I had said something better when she told me. I should have told her how exciting this is, but for some reason, my tongue was tied. The news had me so shaken that I didn’t know which way was up and which was down.

A child?

Yes, I told her we could have that in the future, but honestly, I never gave it any real thought. More specifically, it just didn’t seem real.

And now it does. Now, I’m shaken to my core.

There’s a sudden knock on the front door, startling me out of my thoughts. Could it be Lily? Is this my chance to say what I should have said earlier? To tell her this is good news and I’m excited — even though inside, I’m actually freaking out.

My heart races as I stand up and walk to the door, hoping against hope that it’s her.

“Hey, Felix!” My friend Brent greets me as I open the door, his wide grin taking me by surprise.

Omar stands next to him, a mischievous glint in his eye. My heart sinks. My local party buddies are not who I want to see right now.

“Guys.” I force a pleasant expression onto my face. “What’s up?”

“Listen, man.” Omar claps me on the shoulder. “There’s a new club opening up tonight, and we thought you might want to join us.”

“Usually, I’d be all for it…” I glance back into the empty house.

My thoughts drift to Lily. Does she need me right now? Or would she prefer some space?

“Come on, Felix,” Brent coaxes. “You’ve been in town for weeks and we haven’t even seen you once. A night out with your friends is just what you need!”

I’m torn between wanting to stay and waiting for Lily to call or text and needing a distraction from the overwhelming emotions swirling inside me. In the end, the prospect of a night out with Brent and Omar proves too tempting, and I make up my mind.
