“Matty, Matty,” she cut him off, “listen. I have three more events coming, and I can find another printing company if I need to...”

He quickly changed his tune and her sour look was gone, replaced with a knowing smile.

“I appreciate you correcting the misprint. I need them before Friday, no exceptions. Upon delivery and printing approval, we can discuss working with the next batch of prints.”

Matty folded, quickly promising her he would make sure it was done correctly this time. She did too much business with him for him to gamble with her unhappiness.

Lexi ended the call and tucked her phone into the center console. She grabbed the coffee in the holder beside it and took a long drink wishing it would infuse her with the energy she needed to survive the day.

As she pulled into the parking lot, her phone dinged. She immediately knew it was Mia by the custom tone.

After more than fifteen years of friendship, she should have come into acceptance by now that time was suggestive and Lexi was guaranteed two things: she would always show up, no matter what, and she would also show up 'near' the time they'd chosen.

She quickly parked the car, grabbing her phone, purse, and coffee before heading into the restaurant to meet her waiting friend and business partner.

“Only you would bring coffee to a place that sells coffee.”

“What's our motto?”

“Boys are sex toys?”

“No—yes—but not that one.”

“Oh, yes. Caffeine always, and 'pre-coffee' is an acceptable thing.”

“Bingo.” Lexi clicked her tongue and gave Mia a smile. “Their caffeinated delicacies weren’t what we came here for anyway.” She slid into the booth, sipping her car coffee, then putting it down to reach for the fresh cup Mia had already ordered, anticipating her arrival. Cream and light sugar, just the way she liked it.

“You really are the best.”

“I'm not going to argue there.” Mia giggled, adjusting herself and folding her leg under her knee, smoothing out her deep plum skirt on her side of the booth. “I'd say you're late…”

“I'm within the socially acceptable window of tardiness. You already knew that by how fresh this cup is.” Lexi sighed contently, taking another sip of the stronger coffee and leaning back against the seat. “You are the perfect life partner.”

“As long as you don't crawl into our bed, we'll be good.”

“I can't help that I have cold feet.” There was unsaid irony and amusement to that statement.

“Penny must have gotten it from you.”

“One of these days I'm going to steal my girl away from you if you keep being mean to her,” Lexi teased, reaching into her bag for her planner and simultaneously pulling up the list of notes she had on her phone.

“You're on the ball this morning. You must have had fun last night.”

“Nothing like a little screaming orgasm to keep the mind sharp.”

“According to the club buzz, it was more than a little. Stacie and Sandy said they couldn’t take their eyes off you two in the glory hall .”

Lexi blushed despite herself at the thought of people watching. “All of it was Noah’s idea. I’m surprised double trouble haven’t found a third yet. They’re obviously needing more of something.”

“If the two of them had it their way, they would have climbed Wes like a tree the second they knew he broke up with Jessica .” Mia raised her eyebrows and shook her head knowingly.

“We all knew that wouldn't last,” Lexi replied.

“No question there.”

“Sometimes you need to get under someone to move forward.”

“Didn’t you say that about Noah,” Mia paused, picking up her cup and bringing it to her lips with a knowing smirk. “Almost two and a half years ago.”
