“Okay, perfect. Often moves silently, but can make a growling noise when stalking its prey.”

Paige focused on the gold swirls in the rug while she considered the description. She shook her head as she pinched her brows together. “That doesn’t seem right. It was like a snarling, not a wild animal growling.”

“Are you sure? Snarling and growling can be close.”

“It wasn’t growling.” Paige held up her hands. “Don’t cross it off just yet, but it doesn’t seem right.”

Dewey scribbled something on his notepad and nodded. “Okay, next up is the golem.”

“Features?”

“Large bulky body with red eyes. Often tan or brown in color. The body usually resembles stones loosely held together with–“

“No. This was black, not brown.”

“Positive?”

Paige gave him a curt nod, her fingernails digging into the chair’s upholstery as she recalled her latest sighting of the beast. “Yes, positive. Black as the moonless night.”

Dewey drew a line through the name on his list. “Okay. Last but not least, specific types of vampires. Now, this is a crap shoot, because not all vampires are included in this list, only certain ones. So, I tried to find the ones that the general remedy wouldn’t cover. There are six that I came up with.”

Paige waved her hands in the air. “Whoa, wait!”

Dewey raised his eyebrows and glanced at her. “Yeah?”

“There are six types of vampires?”

“Don’t be ridiculous, Paige!” Dewey said with a shake of his head. “There are hundreds. Only six that the general remedy won’t heal.”

Paige sank her forehead into her palm. “This just gets crazier and crazier. Okay, proceed. Out of these six, are they all black?”

“Yes,” Dewey said. “They all take on a black form with red eyes. Now, from there we have some differences. See if any of these things ring a bell.”

Dewey glanced up at her as he began. “Large pointed ears. Pale, shimmery facial skin. Small, almost invisible wings–“

“No,” Paige said as she waved a hand in the air. “Not it. Move on.”

“All right,” Dewey said, drawing a line through the entry and moving down his list. “Next up is a fellow with smooth, satiny skin. Large gray wings. Bipedal, walking upright, straight and tall.”

Dewey glanced at Paige as she considered the description.

“Makes a growling hiss when it stalks victims.”

Paige squashed her lips together and cocked her head. “Mmm, I don’t think so. That doesn’t seem right.”

“Okay, I won’t cross it off yet, but we’ll move on. Choice number three. Bulky black form with large black wings. Webbed feet with central claw. Makes a chittering noise when stalking victims. Body covered in hair–“

“Wait, stop.”

Dewey snapped his gaze toward her. “Not it?”

“Read it again.” Paige closed her eyes, focusing on the description and the picture in her mind.

The sound of Dewey’s pen tapping on the paper echoed in her ears. “Bulky black form. Large black wings. Webbed feet. Chittering noise.”

“That’s it,” Paige exclaimed. “That’s it!”

“You’re sure? This is important.”
