“It’s anxiety-inducing.”

I skirted around a pile of books and collapsed onto my sofa. “Only for type A people like yourself. For me, this is the optimal environment for thinking.”

Momentarily affronted by the space, he stood stock-still in the center of the room, wheels turning as he mentally organized my mess.

I cleared my throat to get his attention.

Finally, his gaze cleared as it settled on me. “Where’s your laptop?”

I pointed to the desk, and he sat down, hands flying over the keyboard.

“Will you be speaking anytime soon? Because I’m on the edge of my seat here, Ez.”

“In a moment,” he replied. “I don’t want to repeat myself.”

My office door opened, and Alaric—our Gamma and Commander—entered with a frown.

“Shit, it’s that serious?” I asked Ezra.

“You both need to see this.” He glanced at Alaric. “I wanted to show you before speaking to the Alpha in case extra security measures are needed.”

“What did you find?” Alaric demanded.

Ezra turned the screen around. We leaned forward and studied the security footage of a long hallway and prison cells. My gut twisted. Instead of hardened criminals, the cells contained Omegas.

Some curled up on threadbare mattresses, others paced, and a few cried, demanding to be let out. None of them wanted to be there.

All of them were scared.

“You hacked into the facility’s security footage,” Alaric said. He peered at the monitor as if it could answer his questions. “How far back does this go?”

“At least six years,” Ezra said. “There’s also a live feed—”

“A live feed?” Alaric interrupted. “And they can’t detect you on it?”

Ezra shook his head. “I have Gentry downloading the videos, and I’m choosing a second to help with the project, but I wanted to discuss security.”

“It was the right call,” Alaric said. “I’ll make sure there are Enforcers available to guard the security room at all times.”

“What have you found so far?” I asked, knowing Ezra was agitated for a reason.

“Gentry has sent me a few . . . concerning clips. If you watch the footage long enough, you’ll see officers harassing the Omegas. They underfeed the Omegas and randomly pull them from their cells for some kind of testing. We also think they’re using magic on the staff.”

“Based on what evidence?” Alaric asked.

“Gentry saw staff members drinking an unidentified elixir at the end of each shift. There’s also tension between the guards and the other employees at the facility.”

By the Goddess.

I joined Ezra and looped an arm around his waist, pulling him into a half-hug. He refused to admit he needed physical comfort, but his relief was palpable.

Alaric looked between us. “Wynn is going to have questions.”

With the prospect of unidentified medical testing going on, the stakes were higher than ever. Even though I wanted to take things slow and give Brielle time to trust us, we had to know what the Council was doing.

“We know,” I answered.

Dread settled in the pit of my stomach. My wolf hated the thought of making our mate concerned, but we needed answers.
