Skai

It has been a little more than a week since the party, and no Jabarri. I thought I was hurt by Alayna but his indifference is killing me. I have had to stop myself from going to the compound and confronting him, but I refuse to do it. I grab my notebook and prepare to get some work done tonight so I can have a jump on work tomorrow, when the doorbell rings. I hate my stupid ass heart. It immediately jumps, hoping it’s Jabarri. I hurry to the door and practically skid to a stop when I see not Jabarri on my doorstep but Brooklyn.

“Brooklyn?”

“Skai,” she says, her voice breaking right before tears begin to flow down her face. I reach for her, and she breaks down even more. She finally gets herself together, and we make it in the door to the living room.

“What happened?” I ask, and when she tells me what happened, I am pissed.

“Uncle Aryan is going to make me beat his ass! You can stay here for as long as you need. Do you want the upstairs or downstairs guest room?”

“I’ll take the upstairs room,” she says.

I lead her upstairs to the room and leave her to get settled. “If you want to talk more or just want to sit without talking, I’ll be in my room. Come on down,” I tell her before walking out. Almost an hour later, there is a knock on my door,

“Come in,” I yell through the door. She walks in as I am cleaning up and hanging my clothes in the closet. She climbs up in my bed, grabs a pillow, and hugs it as she watches me move about the room.

“I am sorry, Skai, for assuming the night of the retirement party.”

“I understand, let’s just let it go,” I say quickly, grabbing the remote and turning on the TV to some true crime drama as I crawl into the bed and start working on my paperwork until we both fall asleep listening to why the woman on the screen killed her husband.

CHAPTER 9

Jabarri

You have got to be kidding me! I think when I hear Aryan complaining about Brooklyn actually leaving him…finally. I am happy she finally put her foot down, but why the hell did she have to find refuge with Skai at Skai’s house? It’s been a couple of weeks, and nothing has changed, but today, we are helping Brooklyn pack her stuff up and moving her out of Aryan’s suites. That means she is finally alone and Natalie has been avoiding me but that shit stops today! It’s quick work to get Brooklyn all set up in her new house, and I am heading straight to talk to Natalie. I didn’t bother calling first and giving her the chance to avoid me and I pull into her driveway, get out the car and walk in the house without bothering to knock. I catch her and Scottlyn kissing on the sofa, jumping apart guiltily.

“You’re in here doing that and left the front door open? I could have very easily been your parents walking in here,”

“Jabarri, what’s wrong?” she asks, jumping up from the sofa.

“We need to talk.”

“Can’t it wait?”

“No, we need to talk. Now.” I tell her.

“I’m going to go so y’all can talk. I’ll call you later,” Scottlyn says, grabbing her keys and leaving.

“It’s time, Natalie. You were supposed to tell your parents weeks ago, but you haven’t.”

“You know why, Jabarri. I thought you’d understand you haven’t told your family about Skai either. What’s the difference?”

“The difference is you haven’t had to choose between me or Scottlyn. The difference is I never put you in a position where you could lose what you have with her, but you have constantly done that for me. It’s ninety percent my fault because I let you, but you were okay with my losing Skai as long as you got to be with Scottlyn and not upset your family,”

“I’ll lose everything,” she whispers as the first tear falls.

“You won’t lose me, Nat. But I can’t keep being this person for you. I want my happily ever after, too. Things between us have to change,”

“I know, and I am sorry. As much as my family drives me to drink, I can’t imagine losing them. They are all I have,”

“You won’t lose me, sis,” Camryn says from the doorway.

“You heard?” she says to her brother on the verge of freaking out.

“Yeah, I heard, but honestly, I knew you liked girls,”

“What! How?”
