“Probably when I bought a house.”

“Okay. I’ll give you that one, but that’s also an investment in your future. When did you do something fun, just for yourself?”

“Are you saying that we don’t have a future? Are we just something fun for you to do?”

“You do like to throw my words back at me and keep me on my toes. I have no idea. I do know that I like spending time with you. Both clothed and unclothed. We have spent a good bit of time without the clothes on, and while I want to do more of that, I want to do the clothed part too. Will you give me that chance?”

“I want to say no, just like you did to me, but you do have some good points.”

“Which ones are those? I want to make sure I remember them,” I teased.

“I don’t know what this is. I do know that I like being with you, and I want to know how deep that goes. I hate that anything my mother does can interfere with my life as it did when I was younger. This only adds to it. I’m still not sure how good of an idea it will be for us to be seen in public together. But I can see how it might be helpful if we took away some of the sting of our parents' divorce. It might even convince them to get along. Though I doubt that will happen.”

“Are you saying you’ll go out with me?”

“I’m saying that it might be a good idea for us to have dinner together. I will not call it a date, and you should not consider it one. However, I do like spending time with you, and I don’t think we should wait to see what this is. As long as we can be discreet.”

“Whatever you need. However you need to work this. I’m okay with that.”

“You cannot pick me up or bring me home.”

“We’re just two people who are enjoying each other’s company and commiserating on the ending of our parents' marriage.”

“Can you do that?”

“Yes.”

“Will you be able to keep it friendly? You won’t try to take my hand, hold open a door, kiss me, or do anything that might make it look like it is a date?”

“I will hold open the door for you and your chair as that is what a gentleman does for any woman regardless of if she’s his date or not. I do think I can refrain from doing any of those other things. Though I would still like to pick you up.”

“Zach, it wouldn’t be right.”

“No. It wouldn’t be right not to pick you up. I want to go to The Fish House, and the parking near there is horrible. It makes more sense for us to go there together.”

“Or we could just go to a bar that has plenty of parking.”

“I want to take you to someplace nice, and I remember you telling me you like seafood but don’t get it very often. Allow me to do that for you. Have you ever been there?”

“No. Is it a Hollywood hotspot?”

“It couldn’t be further from that. It’s a little out of the way and not well known, but it’s right on the beach and has a great menu and an even better view.”

“We won’t be recognized there?”

“No. And if we went to a bar, it would be loud, and we wouldn't have a chance to talk. I want to talk to you. I want to get to know you.”

“Okay, when do you want to do this dinner that isn’t a date?”

“Tomorrow? Right now?”

Victoria laughed. “I can make tomorrow work. And since you’re insisting on picking me up, how does seven o’clock work for you?”

“That’s perfect. I will see you then. And hopefully, I’ll have good news about your house and when you can get the keys.”

“I would like that. But Zach…”

“Yes?”
