“That’s wonderful. I had no doubt that you would do great. Have you heard back from any of the medical schools?”

“Not yet, but any day now.”

“Let me know how it goes. I’m sure you’ll get into them all.”

“I don’t know about that. I would be happy with just one.”

“It’s always better to have some choices.”

“Hopefully, I will. Table for two?”

“Yes, please.”

“Right this way.”

Hana grabbed two menus, and with a smile and a quick once over at Victoria, she turned and led us to our table. The place was decently busy and was more of a local hang-out for fishermen and surfers. It had a laid-back vibe to it that I loved, but it did make Victoria and I stand out in our outfits.

I should have told her what to expect and to dress more casually. But when she had opened her door and I had seen her in the long black dress that hugged her body and pushed up her breasts, I was glad I hadn’t. I resisted the urge to tease her that she certainly wasn’t wearing something that screamed dinner with a friend, but more of a date, but I didn’t.

We got some looks as we went to our table by the window overlooking the water. I was sure it was because we were overdressed as Victoria looked so incredible in her dress. I normally didn’t care if a woman got looks from men when we walked by and usually even liked it if they looked. But I didn’t like it as much when it was Victoria, even if they were right that she deserved a look and another.

“Chaz will be right with you,” Hana said as we sat down and she handed us our menus.

“Thanks,” I said and then looked over at Victoria.

Her mouth was open, and she had completely forgotten the menu in her hands and might have even forgotten me as she looked at the view in front of her. And it was an incredible view. As far as the eye could see, the California coast spread out in front of us. The cliffs lined the water where no one could get to the beach by land, making it look like we were the only people in the area. There were a few seals lying on the deserted beach, making the view even more spectacular.

“This is beautiful,” Victoria said as she turned to look back at me.

As she had looked at the view, I had been looking at her. I gave her a slow smile and ran my eyes over her body as I said, “Yes, it is.”

My comment had the desired effect as she blushed slightly and looked down at her menu. “What’s good here?”

“Everything. I like the scallops, but I’m partial to them. What seafood do you like?”

“I love lobster, but I never really get it or yellowtail.”

“They have both here, or they should. We can ask Chaz what’s fresh.”

“Does it change?”

“Yes. There are some things that are only available at certain times of the year, but there are some consistent catches, like trout, but lobster season I think just opened, and yellowtail is about to end. So this might be the perfect time for you to come here.”

“We’ll see,” Victoria said as Chaz approached.

Chaz, or Charlotte Hemingway, had owned The Fish House since inheriting it from her father when he died over twenty years ago. She had been born and raised around the sea, and it showed on her wind-torn and sunburnt face. She was quick to smile and share a joke, but she could curse like the sailors she was raised around and didn’t care if she offended anyone with her comments, and at times I think she tried to.

“Where the hell have you been hiding? And how dare you bring this woman with you,” Chaz said as she approached.

“Hey, Chaz. It’s good to see you.” I stood up to give her a hug.

She hugged me back fiercely as if she was trying to crush my ribs. I let out a small cry, and she just laughed.

“You’re getting soft in your old age,” she said as she stepped away from me.

“Chaz. I’d like you to meet Victoria. Victoria, this is Chaz.”

“It’s a good thing you came here with this guy; otherwise I would have kicked you out. We don’t need someone as good-looking as you here. It makes the place look shitter than it is.”
