“She isn’t right for you, for your brand, for your future, for where you want to go. I thought you would see that. I had hoped you would. She won’t work on the show.”
“Then why did you introduce me to her? Why did you have us meet?”
“I was trying to save my marriage. I was doing something nice for her. I didn’t think it would turn into what it is. You were only supposed to help her buy a house, not sleep with her. Can’t you see, she’s a nobody. No one is going to care about her.”
“I care about her. And if the network and the producers can’t see that, then they don’t need to work with me.”
“See? It’s comments like that which tell me that you aren’t really thinking straight. She’s got to you somehow, just like Samantha did to me. And if we aren’t careful, she’s going to ruin your life too, and I can’t have that.”
“Victoria isn’t going to ruin my life. She’s made it better. You know nothing about our relationship or what we mean to each other. You can’t see past your hate for Samantha, and you are projecting it onto Victoria. I won’t let you do that.”
“It isn’t for me to do. I can see it’s already happened. If you hadn't been with her, you would have continued to date the models and actresses that I introduced you to.”
“Introduced me to?”
“Yes, how do you think they knew about you? I told them they should meet you, that they should get to know you.”
“Did you pimp me out to people who wanted to work with you?”
“Nothing of the sort. I just mentioned that you were my son, what a great guy you were, and how they would be smart to get to know you. Whatever conclusion they got from that is on them, not me.”
“You’re a pig. That doesn’t even make sense. Why would you do that?”
“Realtors are a dime a dozen. You needed to have an edge. You needed to stand out from all the rest. What better way than to be known as the playboy son of a famous director who dates models and actresses?”
“How could you do that to me?”
“Don’t try and tell me you didn’t enjoy it. You did. It was all a part of my plan. For you, for the family, for all of us. Ashley helped come up with it, and I have to admit, it’s pretty brilliant.”
“So, you had me date all these famous people to help me get known, which helped grow my business, which helped me get recognized, which then got me under the radar of a production company, so they offer me a reality show? Was that what you wanted to have happened?”
“I hoped it might, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t think it would happen this quickly. It helped when Ray’s boss is an old friend of mine, I put the idea in his ear, and he ran with it. I didn’t think it would work out so well, but it has. They’re ready to sign with you. When they do, the sky's the limit for us. But only if you dump Victoria.
“It was never anything serious between the two of you, and I know you were only doing it to show that you could. You knew I wouldn’t like it, and you have a tendency to do the exact opposite of what I want you to do. But that stops now.”
“When I was a kid. I’ve matured since then.”
“Have you?” my father asked with a smirk.
I couldn’t believe everything that I was hearing. I knew in the back of my mind that he had some help with my career, but I had no idea that he had been manipulating me from the beginning and that he was still trying to do it now.
“At least one of us has. You’re under the impression that I’m still a child and one that you can manipulate. I’m not going to let you do that,” I said.
“It isn’t manipulation if it’s for your own good. You might not see that now, but you will when you’re more famous than me. Something I know you always have wanted.”
“Again, when I was a kid, I said that. And yes, when I first started out and got known, I thought that might be a possibility, and it was a goal. But it isn’t anymore. At least not as much. And I certainly don’t want to sacrifice Victoria and I’s relationship in order to get it.”
“You might not have a choice in that matter.”
“What do you mean?”
“It’s simple. You have a decision to make. Either you’re going to continue on the path that I’ve put forth for you and you’ve gone on and you are going to end things with Victoria, or I will make sure that you have no choice but to do so.”
“You aren’t making any sense. What do you mean ‘no choice’?”
“I will take the decision away from you. I will make it so that you have no other option but to end things with her. Now, you can do it without anyone getting hurt or not. The choice is yours. Let me give you a bit of advice; I would suggest doing as I say. I have worked too hard and done too much to let you destroy it all on some woman who doesn’t measure up to you and our lives. If I have to make the hard decisions for you, I will. Even if you hate me for it.”
“What are you talking about? What are you going to do!?”
