I sat in Zach’s kitchen, drinking my coffee as I tried to come up with a plan. No matter what I thought, it never seemed to be good enough. I only hoped that whatever Zach was doing was going to be more productive than what I was doing.

When I heard the door open, I knew it was Zach. I quickly stood up and walked to the door. Only to stop in my tracks when I saw my mother standing next to Zach. “Mother? What are you doing here?”

“I see you’ve made yourself comfortable in Zach’s house. How lovely,” she said.

Embarrassed, I tried to push down Zach’s shirt to cover myself, but my mother only waved her hand in her face.

“Please, it’s fine. I think it is very modern of you. You got your great legs from me; you might as well show them off.”

I leaned over and looked at Zach as he gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. His hands went around my waist, and he held me for a second. His hand lingered on my ass, and if my mother hadn’t been there, the moment would have gone very differently.

“Why did you bring my mother back with you?” I asked.

“Because she’s here to help us,” he said.

“You asked my mother for help with this? Do you think that’s wise?”

“Yes.”

“You want to take down Charles, as do I. I have the resources and the connections to do it.”

“Mother, I don’t want to turn this into another one of your publicity stunts. The whole reason Zach and I kept things quiet was because we didn’t want people to know or talk about us. Making a big fuss about this isn’t going to help my situation or Zach’s.”

“Who said anything about making a big to-do?” my mother asked.

I glared at her in response. It went without saying if she were involved, it would be big and dramatic.

“Okay, so maybe I needed that in the past. And I still do at times, but not on this one. I put in a few calls and found out that your principal is interested in getting his daughter into acting. He and Charles became friends, and well, as is the way of Hollywood, Charles agreed to do a favor for your principal if he would do a favor for him.”

“He didn’t!” I said.

“It looks that way. And he wasn’t very discreet about it either. Which makes me think that he didn’t think he would get caught. Too bad he messed with the wrong woman, and her mother.”

“Do you have proof?”

“Charles may be an excellent director and pretty good in bed when he wants to be, but he isn’t the most tech-savvy guy out there. You would think when you’re getting a divorce, you would change the password to your email, but apparently, Charles isn’t that smart. Nor is he smart enough to not send emails about conspiring with a principal to get a teacher fired from his personal account.”

I looked over at Zach as he handed me a stack of papers and smiled at me.

“You got him,” I said after I read the first email.

“We got him. Thanks to your mother,” he said.

“Okay, what do we do now?”

“That depends on you. What do you want to do?”

I couldn’t believe that this had come together so quickly and easily and with my mother’s help of all people. She could have used this information to make Charles look like a fool and get whatever she wanted. Instead, she was giving me the information so that I could deal with it quietly. I had no idea what it cost her to do that, but as I looked at her, I wondered if it had cost her anything at all.

Maybe I had been wrong about her and her feelings towards me. Maybe this gesture was her way of us getting back into each other’s lives. As I looked at her and she waited to hear what I was going to say, I knew I wanted that. Eventually.

The more pressing matter was Charles and my tenure and getting him out of Zach and I’s lives. We had the evidence now to show that I did nothing wrong, and I could take it to the superintendent and keep my job, maybe even get tenure. I didn’t know what this meant for Zach and his father, but that was for him to decide. Whatever it was, I was going to be there for him like he had been there for me.

I looked over at my mother and then at Zach as they waited for me to respond. “Simple. Let’s take this bastard down so we can move on with our lives.”
