“Thanks. I enjoyed that,” I stated, for lack of anything better to say.

I looked around for my shoes and tried not to think about how sexy Zach looked or how incredible it had felt to be in his arms. Zach turned around and was leaning up against the counter. He was still naked from the waist down and with that sexy smile on his face.

“You’re welcome. Why are you getting dressed? You got somewhere to be?” he teased.

“Ah, yeah.” I was thankful he had given me a perfect excuse to leave. “I’m meeting some friends for drinks.” I wasn’t, but I was definitely going to call Liam and tell him what happened as soon as I got out of the house.

“Great. I’ll come with you. Are you meeting the infamous Liam?”

I had forgotten that I had told Zach about Liam. In any other circumstance, I would have been happy, even over the moon, with the fact that a man I had just had random sex in a bathroom with wanted to see me after. But this wasn’t any normal circumstance, and he wasn’t just some random guy.

It had been crazy and reckless to have sex with him, but I had wanted him. I couldn’t deny that or how great it was. But it was a one-time thing, and it could never happen again. Even if he was looking at me as if he was thinking of all the different places in the house we could have sex.

“Yes, I am, but I don’t think it would be best if you came along. This was fun, great really, but—”

“Seriously? You’re giving me the brush off? After what we just did, and while I’m not wearing pants?” He opened up his arms, and my eyes immediately fell to the bottom of his shirt and what was just peeking out underneath. I couldn’t hide my smile or the blush that appeared on my face.

“You should put some pants on.” I said and walked out of the bathroom.

I heard him get dressed and follow me into the kitchen. I looked at the paperwork sitting on the counter and thought about how much had changed in such a short period of time. Not that long ago, Zach was just my realtor and stepbrother; now he had been my lover. I knew I had crossed a line and one that I could never cross again. And it worried me that Zach didn’t seem to see the issue.

“Okay, what’s going on? Did I do something wrong? You seemed into me, like really into me, five minutes ago, and now you’re acting like you can’t wait to get away from me. What gives?” he asked when he joined me in the kitchen.

“This can’t happen again. You have to see that.”

“No. I don’t see that, and yes, yes, it should happen again. You’re incredible. What we did was amazing. You think sex like that happens every day? Wait, does it for you? Was it not as good for you?”

I could see the hurt and confusion on his face, and I smiled. “You’re right, it was amazing, you’re incredible. It isn’t that.”

“Are you married? You never said you were. Do you have a boyfriend? Girlfriend? Have to leave the country? What?”

“No. None of those things. I would never do that to you.”

“Okay, then what’s the problem? As I see it, we have something great here, and there doesn’t seem to be any reason why we can’t continue.”

“We might. We could. If we had different parents.”

“What the hell do our parents have to do with this?”

“Really? You think your father is going to be okay with you shacking up with his soon-to-be ex-stepdaughter?”

“What are you talking about? Who? Wait. Are you telling me you’re Samantha Maxwell’s daughter? How is that even possible?”

“Wait? You didn’t know? I thought you knew! How could you not know?!” I yelled.

“You didn’t tell me. No one did. How would I connect you to her? You’ve never talked about her, and you don’t share the same last name.”

“I was given your name by your father. How do you think I got it?”

“I figured you were an intern, or you worked with him or a friend of his. I never in a million years thought you were Samantha’s daughter. How the hell could you keep that from me?”

He started pacing around the room and ran his fingers through his hair. I remembered doing the same thing not that long ago, but I knew I would never get a chance to do it again. He didn’t say anything but kept pacing and occasionally looking at me and shaking his head.

I couldn’t believe that he didn’t know who I was. How could he spend all this time with me and not figure it out? Or even ask? Though I didn’t talk about my mother if I could help it. I tried to keep my life as separate from hers as possible. But I couldn’t imagine Charles, Zach’s father, not ever talking about me or Zach not seeing at least one picture of me with my mother.

“You really didn’t know? Your father never told you? You never thought to ask?”

“No. You were a client, a very hot and sexy client. I only wanted to see you and help you get a house. I didn’t need chapter and verse on your life.”
