The lady glanced up at us as we neared her spot on a couch, and then squinted at me.

“Mrs. Felicia? It’s me, Billie.” I reached down with my free hand, hoping she’d shake it.

She did, thankfully.

“Oh, Billie! How are you?”

“I’m wonderful. May I introduce you to my friend?”

She let go of my hand. There was no casual way to keep a hold of both of them. I just had to hope the initial connection would persist.

She broke into a smile. “Of course. Please, take a seat. Join me.”

We settled down, and I managed to get a seat between the two of them.

“Very nice to meet you,” Roger said. “I’ve seen you at some of these functions before.”

“Did you know Mrs. Felicia has her own cancer charity?” I leaned in slightly, squeezing his arm. I looked him straight in the eyes as I said, “Isn’t it the most wonderful thing to give the way she does? To have the ability to make a difference like that? The legacy it leaves?”

He looked enthralled. He was right there. I was going to be able to get him to do this, but instead of doing it, he was staring at me.

Why wasn’t he doing it?

I took his hand in mine, making sure I had a good connection, feeling the heat flowing from me to him.

“That would be amazing if you did that.”

He stared at me and slowly started to nod. “It would.”

“You should do it, now, tonight.”

“I should.” He nodded vigorously and finally turned to Mrs. Felicia. “I’m going to make a donation to your charity now, tonight.”

“That would be wonderful,” Mrs. Felicia said. “We’re always looking for donors. I can get you in touch with my daughter. She helps me run the charity. Her husband just passed from cancer, and I know a large donation would really help her spirits. Make her feel like she’s helping to do something.”

He smiled at Mrs. Felicia and pulled out his phone. “Can you give me her contact information?”

“Here, take my spot so you two can work out the details,” I said, slipping out from the center position.

“You don’t understand the change this will make in so many lives,” Mrs. Felicia said as I slipped away.

Job done. Time to make my exit and get out of this house.

I turned and walked toward Kaden, noticing a blond goddess who was heading in the same direction, focused on Kaden. Her slip dress shimmied over a lean body, breasts with the hint of nipple showing, and still she somehow looked classy and oozing money.

We ended up in front of Kaden at the same moment. Her eyes froze on me, her lips parting, and I suddenly realized who she was.

I’d only met her one time.Once. Everyone else was forgetting me, and yet this half-sister of mine, whom I’d met once nearly a decade ago, recognized me. There was no misunderstanding the anger burning in her gaze.

“What are you doing here? He’s not your father. He didn’t want you here before. You think he wants you here now?” she asked, as if she couldn’t understand the nerve I had to trespass in her home.

“I…I was…” I couldn’t speak. Just like that, I was the awkward fifteen-year-old with fat cheeks and clearance-rack clothes, feeling like an interloper.

Kaden wrapped his arm around my waist. “She’s here with me. Is there a problem?”

My sister broke away and walked across the room, right to the person I feared seeing the most. She talked to him and then he looked my way.

“We should go,” I said, keeping my back to my sister and father. I grabbed Kaden’s arm, tugging him away from the bar, knowing we’d have to cross paths with them to get out of there but wanting to leave at all costs.
