Digging through old case files on my computer I start to notice that things with Chief Braxton don't add up.

Every time I think I've got him figured out, there's another wrinkle in the story. He seems to be involved in all of these cases where women have been wronged and looking for justice.

But why? What is he getting out of it? Is this just a personal vendetta against these women? Or is there something else going on that I can't see yet?

I start digging deeper into his background, skimming through news articles and searching through old case files. But no matter what angle I try, I can't seem to find any clues as to what he might be up to.

Frustrated, I throw my hands up in the air and pace around my small office. But just then, an idea strikes me like lightning from a clear sky. Maybe Chief Braxton is being manipulated by someone shady in order to help them get away with their crimes.

With that hypothesis, I start going through the files a second time, but this time with a fine-toothed comb, trying to figure out who the chief is closest to in terms of his past cases.

On a whim, I click on the name of a judge I've always found to be just a bit off-kilter.

Chief Braxton was involved in a case with her about six months ago. It's unusual for an actual police chief to get this deep in a specific case. Something's fishy.

I hit 'Control+F' on my keyboard to search all the cases where this judge presided in Braxton's career. It's not many, but the ones that I see are big ones. Very big ones that all seem to have the charges dropped against the defendant, which is often the City of Miami if not some megacorporation.

I cock an eyebrow, feeling like I'm on to something before scrolling through the current word document I'm on, looking at all the times Control+F highlighted the search term 'Braxton'.

There it is, causing me to bolt upright in my chair.

Chief Braxton worked the scene of the crime of the last case. Very unusual for a man of his stature. But what is even more unusual is that Chief Braxton was the one to sign the warrant, not the judge this time, and he also signed the charges on this case. And...the judge ended up being the one to throw out the case, claiming insufficient evidence as she always does when they work together.

But what's different this time is that Braxton pushed for a change of venue and a change of judge...which he didn't get. Strange.

Did he really want to convict this time or was this all a setup to throw someone like me off the scent of what these two might have been up to for years?

This most recent case makes it look like they're going in completely opposite directions for the first time, and as I scan more I see that to the trained eye it looks the same. The case was thrown out. But Braxton did a lot of things differently, like the request for a change of judge and venue. That's huge.

Is this a one-off, or did they have a falling out? And if so, it looks like the judge has a lot more pull than my boss.

Leaning back in my chair I scratch my temple before raking a hand over the top of my head. Larry said that the lawyer called them out of the blue. The lawyer seems to be paying off some sort of government official.

Which one would it be? Braxton or the judge?

If this last case went differently than all the others, which it did, then it's most likely the disgruntled party...which would mean Braxton.

This is a big reach. The 'evidence' is there, but proving anything with what I've got won't amount to much of anything. I need something more concrete, like the name of that lawyer. And I can get that from the woman who's been on my mind constantly.

My mind drifts off as I consider whether or not I'd be doing this for Larry. Oftentimes people in the United States meet their 'best friend', their spouse, and a lot of their peer groups at work.

That's more or less how I met Larry, right? The younger generation is more likely to meet strangers from apps and things like that, but not Generation X, like me. Or maybe I'm a millennial cusp, whatever the hell that means.

The point is...is Larry really my friend anymore, let alone my 'best friend'. He was always my best friend because of all the wins we got together, bringing charges against people and then watching them easily get put away.

But how much does that matter anymore? What's really important is an internal connection, not a business-related one.

The same kind of connection I'm feeling for the first time in my life, with his daughter.

Has too much of my life up to this point been just about work? Yes.

Is it time to change that just for the sake of change? Not necessarily.

Is it time to change it because I've finally met someone who makes me feel different, see the world differently, and whom I can't imagine not having in my life, by my side, forever? Absolutely.

Why? Why does she make me feel things differently than I ever have before?

Sure, it's her curvy body that's got my eyes hooked, and has my dick demanding to be buried inside her. But not just for fun. Because I want to make a baby with her, to start a family.

The girl is sharp as a knife, with a Lolita wit to match. She plays the game of life like a fiddle and gets what she wants, despite the circumstances.

And she's family-oriented, trying her hardest to exact revenge for her mother, even though she passed away over fifty percent of her life ago.

That's the kind of woman a man needs by his side. But there can only be one man to have this particular one-of-a-kind gem.

Me.

And it's time to do exactly that.
