“Some of it, but not the full extent. I tried to hide it as much as possible… but she came for a visit to help out with the kids after Darcy left and heard some of my phone calls to banks and lawyers.”

Poppy nodded. Of course. His mother seemed like a pretty smart, quick-witted woman. She probably hurt too when Darcy left and she witnessed her son and grandkids devastated. “That’s why she’s so protective of you.”

He waved her off. The lines of his shoulders relaxed, his expression softened. “She likes to butt in.”

“She loves you. And she’s right in being careful.”

“Did she tell you anything?”

Poppy remembered the long looks his mother had given her. She never quite talked about it, but the silent warning was there. Don’t break his heart. “She didn’t have to. I mean, I could tell she wants you to be happy.”

“Yes, I guess.”

She opened her mouth, then hesitated. Her body tensed up, and her heart, her fucking beating heart leaped to her throat and burned. A burning sensation spread through her, her cheeks reddening with emotion. Tell him, you idiot. Tell him you’re falling for him. He must have sensed her wavering, because he tilted his head to the side, leaning in, silently welcoming whatever truth she kept hidden. Then, she faltered. “You’re doing a phenomenal job with the kids. Don’t ever forget that.”
