His body shudders at my hot breath tickling his ear.

“If you tempt me, miss Dresden, I may have to take you into that room and show you what I wanted to do to you on our first night together,” Cain says. “And trust me, when I’m through with you, you’ll be begging that I never stop.”

His filthy mouth’s words send my mind into a spiral. If I had my way, we wouldn’t make it back to the bedroom before I have Cain lodged deep inside me again. We’d do our primal dance in the open for all to see.

“Is that so?” I walk my fingers down the front of his shirt. I stop at the throbbing meat stretching the zipper of his trousers. Cain holds back a snarl as I graze his manhood and take his hand in mine. “Then what’s stopping you?”

I lead his hand under my dress and up my thigh until his rough fingers strike my drenched panties. Cain snarls and crumbles back, catching himself on the wall.

“Not yet,” Cain says. “But trust when I say it hurts me deeply to go. I’d rather be balls deep in you than a stuffy old meeting.”

“Then I’ll keep the bed warm for your arrival and wait for you to join me.”

“Warm is fine, but wet is better.” He winks. It melts my heart into my core.

Cain adjusts his tie, but somehow even with the violent jerking motion, it sits perfectly knotted as if we never shared our moment of passion.

“That ass is going to be mine,” he says.

Before he goes, Cain pulls me in for one final kiss that sucks all the air from my lungs and turns my legs to jelly. His hands wander over my body until he finally plants them firmly on my ass. He squeezes tightly. Oh, God, it feels so amazing.

“I’ll see you tonight.” He leaves me breathless and panting, watching as he takes his confident strides back in whatever direction he came from.

After a brief moment to compose myself, I wake Tony from his deep slumber. He gets ready for school and we have breakfast together while he wipes the sleep sand from his eyes.

“We’re gonna do painting today,” Tony says. A good meal woke him up and prepared him for the day ahead.

We walk hand in hand through the house to meet the driver waiting outside.

“What are you going to make?” I ask.

“Dunno,” he shrugs. “We’re gonna hear about it when we get to class. I wanna do a rocket ship but the girls say they wanna do flowers.”

He blows raspberries at the idea of drawing flowers in art class.

We step outside into the early morning sun, and Cain wasn’t kidding when he said his team would be coming in and out. The driveway is littered with black cars, each fancier than the next. A group of well-dressed men is standing around, bumming cigarettes, and laughing as we walk by to find Cain’s driver.

“We’re going to kick the shit out of that Barberetti bastard,” one of them says.

“Watch your language,” I shout. I recognize one of them from the funeral. So it’s Donny and his second groveling for their boss’s attention?

On noticing Tony at my side, one of them apologizes but they don’t hold eye contact with me long. Their chatter turns to a hushed whisper while Tony and I walk past.

Good. Tony is too young to hear such vile language.

“Have a good day at school.” I help Tony set his bags in the trunk.

“Uh-huh,” Tony groans. He hates school and who could blame him? Still, he forces a missing-toothed smile to his face and bounces towards the backseat.

“They’re saying Barberetti’s going to die tonight,” I hear the men speaking again while I return to the house. My warning of staying still went in one ear and out the other. What a vile way to put things.

Dying is nothing to joke about. But what if they’re not joking?

“Bullshit,” another says. “Rocco’s not going anywhere. This merger’s for shits and giggles.”

The mention of the merger soothes my racing mind.

“Merger? Don Hawthorne’s got a bullet with his name on it. I watched him carve it myself. Rocco Barberetti’s getting one between the eyes.”
