Before I can fully catch my breath, Malcolm lifts me up and into his arms. Cradles me against his chest while tipping my face up to meet his. “Hi.”

The softness in those gorgeous green eyes and the sexy grin cause me to giggle. “Someone’s happy.”

“Someone isn’t ever letting his precious gift go.”

“Is that so?” I nuzzle his cheek. “Because no one asked me if I agree to this.”

“Babe, the moment you walked into my room that night, you lost all rights.” Then, he surprises me with a quick and passionate kiss. Tasting himself on my lips, he groans and pulls back so I can see just how serious he is. “You’re mine.”

I’M IN BLISS. A wonderful period of my life where everything feels right, and I have no worries. It’s like being a kid all over with the added bonus of having adult privileges.

In the last two weeks I’ve come to terms with the lies and betrayal. I’ve forgiven my mother because when all is said and done, she did the best she could. She stayed with a monster to give me the best life possible with the cards she was dealt. Out of her love for me, she endured so much pain with the Fosters.

I remember the shouts. Her cries. Her wanting to leave but staying because we were a family.

Losing my father must’ve been hard. I can only imagine the emptiness she felt, because I now understand what love does to a person. What you will do for them.

I’d kill to save him if it ever came to that.

Being with Malcolm, seeing his own feelings for me come to light with each action he takes, is humbling. Fills my once-beaten heart with joy. I’m in a better place because of him.

I love him.

His easy smiles. His charming disposition.

Even the darkness he tries to hide from me.

Every single facet of his personality calls to mine, and I accept him as he comes.

Dangerous and sweet. The perfect deadly concoction.

“We’re here, London,” Gina says, bringing me back to the present as we park in front of a Starbucks. “Are you coming, or do I get you the usual?”

“Nah. Give me a moment and I’ll come in.” Pulling my cell from my small purse, I send him a text.

Getting coffee, and then heading home after a stop at the paint supply store. What do you want for dinner? ~Twirl

Putting it away for now, I exit the car and walk toward the entrance. Gina is just past the threshold when someone pulls on my arm.

“What the...?” My eyes shift toward the person; the curse on the tip of my tongue dies at the sight of Brittany. She looks just like the last time I saw her. Angry and overdone in the makeup department. Desperation swirls all around her.

“Aren’t you going to say hello to your brother’s fiancée, Lola?” Another tug, her hold painful, and I yelp. “Come give me a hug.”

My head shakes, and before I can call Gina, the click of a gun is heard. She’s right beside me, her Glock pointing at Brittany’s chest. “Remove your hand. You have three seconds before I shoot.”

She lets go and holds both hands up. “I’m just saying hello. No need for the hostility.”

“Bullshit, and you know it.” Gina steps between us further, pushing me back, creating distance between us. “Leave.”

“This is a public—”

“Mr. Asher will be in touch,” she spits out, interrupting Brittany who looks toward a store across the street. My eyes follow and meet the ones of a man I hate. Alton stares at me, then looks to Gina, and you can visibly see his disdain for her.

He mouths the word I miss you slowly then gives me a wave, and I shudder. I’m so caught up in my disgust that I miss the rest of their conversation. All I manage to catch is the sight of Brittany walking past us.

She’s at the curb’s edge when she turns to look back at me from over her shoulder. “I’ll be seeing you soon, dear little Lola. Oh, and tell Asher he’s welcome.”
