Olivia

Well, Chadd Gordo just went way too far.

The Vakutans are said to be the perfect soldier species. They learn how to fight as soon as they can walk, training with weapons when most sapient species are still trying to figure out which end of the playpen smells the worst.

While their bellicose reputation is certainly deserved, they aren’t nearly as prone to random outbursts of violence as rumor would suggest. The truth is, Vakutans know very well the price of their rages and are a lot more restrained than people would otherwise think.

But there are certain ‘soft spots’ on a Vakutan’s psyche. Call them chinks in the armor, if you will. All it takes is a minor irritant to set them off.

Vakutan are known to be fiercely loyal to their mates. They mate for life and they consider it to be sacred.

While Yarvok and I may not be officially mated to each other, we are in a relationship which might be close enough for him to count. I look over at Yarvok and I can feel the anger coming off him in waves. In another moment, he’s going to take action.

And if he takes action, there might not be much of Chadd Gordo left. Fratyvoyans are incredibly durable despite their cute and furry appearance. However, even they can’t survive being torn limb from limb. Vakutans have been known to do that.

Even if Chadd doesn’t get killed or even seriously injured, this incident will not go over well with the Erebus Collective. They might use it as an excuse to deny us a license and the grant after all.

I’m not worried about losing the money I invested. There’s lots more where that came from. I am worried about Yarvok losing his dream. Not to mention if he does lose this contest, for whatever reason, he’s probably going to go back to his old dream of asteroid mining.

A surge of panic runs through me at the prospect of losing him. I don’t want him to leave. We’re just beginning to explore this thing between us, this intensity that I have never known.

A number of options flash through my mind. I could grab Yarvok and try to drag him out of here. That might work but would also embarrass the hell out of him. Who would buy beer from a man who is, and I hate this term with a passion but a lot of people still think this way. ‘puss whipped?’

So what can I do? I have to do something before a fight breaks out. Then I realize that humans are considered to be one of the weakest species in the galaxy, despite our prominent place in the United Star Alliance military.

My hand darts out and slaps Gordo hard on the furry cheek. His head snaps to the side, and he opens his snout with shock at what I’ve just done. I know he’s not hurt, but the shock and surprise have him taken totally aback.

“Watch your mouth, Gordo. You just crossed a line.”

I lean forward and take him by the collar, putting my face right next to his.

“I could have you arrested,” he whispers. “For assault.”

“And I just saved your miserable life. How about some gratitude?” I whisper back.

I release him, and go to Yarvok.

“Let’s go find our prefab home.”

I meant to say a prefab home, but you know what they say about Freudian slips.

I go with a super luxury model, and pay for it myself. Yarvok doesn’t argue, which is a good thing considering the mood I’m in. Besides, this is for me as much as him. It’s an investment in my future.

Someone is going to have to live at the brewery site. It is the frontier, after all, and there are those homesteaders who wouldn’t hesitate to steal building materials from us. Not to mention the potential of more space baboons coming in to ruin our day.

“Don’t worry, Yarvok,” I say as the pre fab home is hoisted into place by a hovercraft crane “we’re going to beat Chadd Gordo. You’ll see.”

“With you on my side, Olivia,” he replies with a huge smile “I do believe there’s nothing we can’t accomplish.”
