“All right. I’ll let them know.”

The skiers are making their way back, and so we finish our coffees and start heading for the helicopters. It’s a beautiful journey back over the snow-covered mountains and fields, with the lake glinting in the late morning sunshine like a huge mirror.

Back at The Jewel Box, we visit the restaurant for a light lunch. Elizabeth has already disappeared with her mother and sister to start getting ready, and it’s not long before the rest of us head to our villas to do the same.

It doesn’t take me long to get my suit on. I leave Heidi putting on her makeup, go down to Mack’s villa, and knock on the door.

“Just checking on the groom,” I say when Sidnie opens the door.

“Come in.” She looks stunning in a light-blue dress with a pleated skirt, her blonde curls bouncing around her shoulders. “He’s a bit nervous,” she whispers, gesturing at the guys in the living room. “I’ll leave you to it. I want to finish my makeup.” She goes off to the bedroom.

I walk into the room and discover Mack sitting in one of the armchairs, leaning back, ankle resting on the opposite knee, watching Huxley pace up and down in front of the windows. Thankfully, they’re both dressed, in dark-gray suits, with wing-tipped collars and bow ties.

“How are you feeling?” I ask.

Huxley glances at me but doesn’t answer.

“He’s a bit queasy,” Mack says.

“Better or worse than jumping off the Sky Tower?” I ask, amused.

Huxley swallows. “Ten times worse.”

“Jesus. Why?”

“You’ll understand when it’s your turn,” Huxley states, and Mack raises his eyebrows and nods as if to say,He’s right.

“Are you worried she’s not going to turn up?”

Huxley stares at me. “Well, now I am.”

I laugh. “I didn’t mean it was a possibility. She’s not going to back out now.”

“She said no to me every month for ten years. I’m kinda used to being rejected.”

“She’s having your baby,” Mack reminds him.

“Yeah…”

“Dude,” I say, “the girl’s crazy about you. She’s not going anywhere.”

Huxley just gives us a helpless look.

“I’m getting worried,” Mack says. “You’ve gone the same shade of green that you went up the Sky Tower.”

Huxley puts a hand to his mouth, then says, “Excuse me,” and strides off to the bathroom.

I meet Mack’s eyes, and we both laugh. “He’s such a wuss,” Mack says.

“Were you nervous on your wedding day?”

“Yeah. I was shaking by the time of the ceremony. Didn’t throw up, though.”

“What about if I go and check on Elizabeth? Make sure everything’s okay?”

“That’s a great idea.”

“All right. Be back in a bit.” Leaving Mack to watch the groom, I leave the villa and walk across to where Huxley and Elizabeth were staying.
