“Iswearthatgirlisn’t right.” Banner shook his head and stared at the three of us. “Doesn’t stop you fools from sniffing around, though, does it?”

I rubbed my temples. “Apparently not.”

Sam patted the old man on the shoulder and cleared his throat. “What’ll it take for you not to tell her folks?”

“Yard duty for two weeks.” Banner studied Sam while chewing on his dentures. “And another one of your sister’s cakes.”

“Fine. One word gets back to them and I’ll let Bogie shit in your yard for the rest of the summer. Understand?” Sam held out his hand to the man and I watched as they shook.

“Understood.” Banner nodded to me and Cyrus before slowly making his way back to his house.

I pushed down my anger and shook my head at Sam. “Two weeks of yard work? You’re a sucker.”

Sam stared hard at Poppy’s house. “How do you think she’d react if that got back to her family?”

“How do you think she’d react if she knew all the shit Banner got you to do to keep him quiet?” I found myself looking at Poppy’s house too, wondering where she was and what she was doing. Probably throwing a fit in her bed, if I knew her.

Cyrus bent over and picked up a handful of rocks. He rattled them in his palm while staring off in the distance. “I know I don’t have a single right to be fucking pissed, but I am. And I’ve never lied to you two so I won’t start now. The last thing I want to do is sit in a boat with either of you right now. I’m going to go hit something and shake this feeling.”

I snorted. “You took the words right out of my mouth.”

Sam rolled his eyes at both of us as he backed away. “You can both figure your shit out and let me know when you’re over it.”

I felt like fighting and that wouldn’t do anyone any good. I had no right to feel as angry as I felt. “We’re good.”

Cyrus looked between the two of us. “So, what? Are you two going to be sneaking into her bedroom at some point this weekend?”

I hesitated. Sam looked away.

“That fucking kiss. Goddammit.” Growling, Cyrus moved closer and lowered his voice. “Not a single one of us has a right to fuck up our friendship.”

“So, we won’t.” I blew out a harsh breath. “I’ll keep my hands to myself. I need some time to get my head on straight, anyway.”

Sam raked his hands through his hair and tugged. “Yeah, sure. Fine. I have some shit I need to take care of at my parents’ house. I’ll spend the weekend there.”

“Just a cooldown period. Before we fucking ruin nearly three decades of friendship.” Cyrus looked back at Poppy’s and swore. “We all just need to calm down and come back with a clear head.”

I cracked my neck. “Aren’t we the picture of maturity?”

“Forgetting that we almost just threw a fucking fit in there?” Cyrus nodded at Sam. “When the fuck did you get your dick pierced?”

I held up my hands. “I hate that I know his dick is pierced now. I don’t want to know anything else about it. I’m going.”

“I just can’t get the thought of it out of my head. Why would you shove a needle through your dick?” Cyrus shuddered. “Something’s wrong with you.”

I saw trouble in Sam’s eyes and knew whatever he was about to say was going to end with Cyrus swinging at him.

“Poppy loved it.” Sam rolled his shoulders. “Maybe consider an upgrade for yourself.”

Cyrus pointed at Sam while backing away and laughing a scary laugh. “I’m leaving. You’re lucky I love you, man.”

Sam stood his ground and watched Cyrus until the bigger man was in his truck and pulling away. Then Sam turned that same stony look on me. “Well?”

I opened my door and nodded at him. “Sorry you’re so touchy about your dick ring.”

“Fuck you, Judy.”
