“Now who thinks they are funny,” Lily said, coming from behind Zane. “Leave them alone or you might find my foot booting your ass tonight too.”

Heather laughed as her boss and the best friend of the man she loved walked away.

“You’ve got your family now,” she said to him.

“Yeah,” he said. “I finally do.”

Epilogue

Three Weeks Later

“I wish you would have let me have a birthday party for you,” Heather said a few weeks later.

“I don’t need a birthday party. Men don’t care about those things,” Luke said. He was just happy to spend his birthday with her. He couldn’t remember if he ever spent a birthday with anyone he cared for.

The guys in the Army didn’t count to him. They didn’t even know it was his birthday and he didn’t share that information.

Zane knew but always kept it low key.

“At least you are letting me take you to dinner,” she said.

“There is that smirk again. What is going on with you?” he asked. There was no way she knew what he was going to do tonight. No one knew.

Well, that wasn’t true. Daisy knew because he needed help and Daisy was the only one that could do it. But she still didn’t know when.

“Nothing,” she said and then giggled.

He turned and caught her eyes on the doorway from the backroom at Mona’s. He saw Zane and Lily come in, followed by Daisy, Ivy, Dahlia—that he’d recently met—Violet, Trace, Reese, Poppy, Jasmine and Wesley.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” she said. “Looks like everyone had the same idea as us to come to dinner tonight.”

“Except Rose and Thomas,” Poppy said. “They’ve got the kids.”

He should have figured that she’d find a way to get him a party after he’d made the mistake of saying he’d never had one.

She was the one in for a surprise tonight though.

“They’ve got all the kids?” he asked.

“No,” Zane said. “My two are with Zara.”

“Cori is with Holly at Rose’s,” Jasmine said. “She said she and Thomas had it covered since Colin was fussy and they didn’t want to leave him with someone. It’s less than two hours for us. The rest of you can live it up at the bar if you want.”

Luke knew he was going to be living it up tonight but not with everyone else around. Or maybe they could stay a bit later to celebrate.

“Sorry,” Heather said. “I just couldn’t resist. You wouldn’t tell me what you wanted. You only said you wanted to go to dinner, and this is what I decided to do.”

He looked over at Daisy and lifted his eyebrow at her. Daisy’s jaw opened as if it just occurred to her what might be happening.

“I know what I want,” he said. “I planned on telling you tonight. Looks like everyone gets to see if my birthday wish comes true.”

“Sure,” she said sarcastically. “Now you’re going to tell me.”

Everyone had been seated now that the table was put together. He looked around and pulled the box out of his pocket and slid it in front of her. “What I want is you. I know it seems like it's early to most. Much faster than we’ve moved before.”

Daisy started to laugh. Poppy jumped up, “Be honest with us, Heather. You two hooked up at the wedding. I know it. I’ve got that spidey sense.”
