At least he could say he saw how the other side lived now.

A Nice Mix

“What are you doing here on a holiday?” Lily asked Heather.

“Sorry,” Heather said. “I thought I could sneak out here without you knowing.”

She had the day off. Daisy was working in the shop. Rather than sit around and do nothing, she started to play with some formulas in her office at home but ran out of some of the herbs she wanted.

Then she figured she might as well go into her office behind the greenhouse that housed the bulk of her herbs. She could get what she needed and then steal some flowers too.

“You know there are cameras on the property,” Lily said.

“I know,” she said, sighing. “I guess I figured you wouldn’t feel the need to come see me.”

“It’s fine,” Lily said. “Luke left an hour ago. Ryder is down for his nap. Willow went to run some errands with Zane. She likes being his sidekick even when she made him wait twenty minutes to accessorize just right.”

Heather laughed over that comment. “I’m sure Zane has no problem waiting for her.”

She was trying not to comment on the fact Luke was there.

“Never,” Lily said. “It did him well to spend some time on the back of the property shooting and talking with Luke. I know he misses the bond he had with him. He’s put most of his service time behind him, but what he had with Luke was special. I couldn’t be more thrilled Zane has that in his life again and that Luke is going to be stationed so close by.”

“Oh,” she said. “I thought he was in the academy still?”

She had to brush this off as best as she could that she knew more. But she obviously didn’t know that much because they hadn’t had any communication in a few weeks.

They still had a text here and there but were keeping it light.

There was part of her that was hurt he knew where he’d be and never said a word.

Maybe he changed his mind about wanting to get to know her and was trying to figure out how to say it.

“He is,” Lily said. “He’ll be graduating in a few weeks. He’s not sure of his exact location, but it’s down to three and the furthest is only forty minutes, the other two thirty and twenty. Either way, he’s staying put at the cottage.”

“That’s great,” she said, forcing a smile. She needed to change the topic fast. “How is Jasmine doing?”

“She’s great. So is Cori.”

Jasmine gave birth to her daughter, Cori Noelle, two weeks ago. At least she was home for that birth and could visit right away. Just like when she got home from Easter at her parents she rushed to see Poppy and her daughter.

There was something so sweet about the fact that Jasmine chose Wesley’s late wife’s name for her daughter’s middle name.

It amazed her how she was around so many women who were just accepting of the pasts of the men they were with.

Maybe it would help her too.

After listening to what her brothers said, she did think Luke might have that worry.

Then she told herself she believed what she said. If you love someone enough, you got through the rest.

Not that what she felt for Luke was love. No way. They hadn’t spent enough time together to get there.

But she’d like to see where it was going.

Then she had to ask herself if she would take the next step and bring up the fact that Lily had told her this today.
