Heather didn’t think the party was ever going to end. Or at least for them to make an excuse to leave.
It was only seven, but Jasmine and Rose had left to get the babies ready for bed. Rose was tired and Thomas wanted her to lie down. That left Violet and Trace, her and Luke, and Ivy. She took her leave and said she was beat too and Ivy followed them out.
“Do you want to go back home and relax?” Luke asked her.
“No. I want you to take me to your house and go back inyourbed. Daisy will be home soon.”
He frowned at her. “You said you were tired.”
“A lie to get out of there. What I’m tired of...is waiting for you and want to know why I am.”
She figured she was going to just have to give it to him straight to get an answer back.
“Guess you don’t pull any punches,” he said.
“I thought you would have known that about me by now,” she said. “I’m learning a lot more about you.”
She wondered if there was part of him that doubted what she felt for him. Then she saw his face when he was talking to Ivy about women not being able to handle his career in the service. It reminded her what her brothers had said and she felt it was the time to say that to him too.
“Good or bad, the things you are learning?” he asked.
“If it was bad I wouldn’t be in your vehicle with you right now and asking you to take me back to your bed.”
“Good point,” he said. “I’m worried I’m going to hurt your leg.”
“I figured that was part of the problem, but it’s fine. As long as this sexy cast when the rest of me is naked doesn’t make you go limp, I don’t think it’s going to be an issue, but who knows?”
He laughed at her in the car. Laughed loudly. “I’m not sure there is much about you that would make me go limp. I was worried I was going to have to find a plate to put on my lap when you kept rubbing my leg.”
She let out a little giggle with a shoulder wiggle. “Good. Then stop being bullheaded and take me to bed. I’ve waited long enough, if you ask me. Over five months since the last time. I’ll consider it as almost being with you while you were in the service.”
He looked at her and frowned. “Why did you say that?”
“Because I’d wait for you,” she said. “Just like I did. Ivy, she doesn’t get it yet. That is for her to figure out. But me, if I knew I had you for me, then you can damn well bet it’s all I’d think about while I waited for you to return.”
Luke smiled at her. Not the forced ones she’d seen before with him earlier on, but the ones he let loose now and again when she hit a spot deep in his chest.
She noticed he was driving faster now. She leaned a little to see him speeding and he caught her doing that, but she held her smile back.
They got to the little cottage by the water he was staying in.
He came to a stop fast, parked and then shut the SUV off. She was getting out of the passenger side and then opening the door to get her crutches when he came around and picked her up.
“Wow. I need my crutches,” she said.
“I’ll come back out and get them when we’re done.”
“Guess I said the right things to get you to move this fast. I should have said it earlier.”
“I’m not sure it would have made a difference before now,” he said.
She didn’t bother to dispute that. It was just a nice feeling to know she got this much out of him as it was.
His door was opened and then kicked shut with his foot, him marching into his bedroom and then putting her on the bed much gentler than she thought he would.
He came down on top of her, her left leg went wide and to the side out of the way, but she was sure he was aware of it at all times.
His lips found hers and this was a kiss like they’d had the first time they were together.
