“How can you protect her? You’re only one man.”

I raked my hand through my hair, pacing back and forth. “I have some folks coming in to help me.”

He laughed again, the hollow sound ripping at another part of me. “The big, bad mafia dude thinks he can protect my baby sister.”

“Yeah,” I snapped. “I can and I will.” When I gave him an angry glare, he seemed to back down.

Mike pushed himself away from the wall, heading into another room. I shook my head then followed him. He was one of the most difficult people I’d ever met, but it was obvious how much he cared for Madisen. I leaned against the door to the kitchen, watching as he poured two glasses of whiskey.

“Where the hell am I going to go?”

“Anywhere you want. I’ll pay for it,” I told him.

He said nothing but I sensed his continued anger and confusion. “The billionaire thug.”

While I wanted to be angry with him, the guilt around my relationship with Madisen prevented me from saying anything. “Whatever, Mike. This is serious. Even if you did tell them where she is, they’ll torture and kill you.”

“Is that what you do, buddy? Do you torture and kill others? Do you enjoy it?” He had a smirk on his face as he handed me a glass. While I took it, I found it difficult not to lash out at him.

“I do what’s necessary in a world you can’t understand.”

“You’re right and I don’t want to. You used to be a good guy, although I knew you had an evil streak in you. That’s why I never wanted you to touch Madisen.”

Son of a bitch. “Well, don’t worry. I’m only trying to keep both of you alive.”

He powered down every drop, placing the glass on the counter with a hard thud. “Fine. I’ll leave tomorrow.”

“No, you’re going to get a bag together and leave now. If they aren’t already here, they will be soon.”

“You’re serious?”

“I am.”

“I have work. I can’t just leave.”

“Yes. You. Can.”

There was a moment when I realized he’d finally accepted the situation was serious. “Okay. I’ll get some things together.”

“Good. I’ll wait.”

He walked past me but not without slamming into my side. The man could hate me. That was fine. As long as he remained alive and couldn’t be used. I stood where I was, taking a sip of the drink then placing the glass on the counter beside his. Then I returned to the living room, moving toward the front window.

What a fucking mess.

As the seconds ticked by, I continued to scan the street. Maybe two minutes later, I noticed a large SUV cruising the street. My instincts kicked in and I shifted to the side of the window, pulling my weapon into my hand. After the vehicle disappeared out of sight, I remained on edge.

Then the driver swung around again, slowing in front of the building on the left. Fuck.

As they parked, I backed away. When three men climbed out, I flew into the bedroom. “We’re leaving now!”

“What the hell is going on?”

“You’ve been found.”
