“What are we cooking tonight?”

“I’m still trying to decide,” she said as she opened the fridge.

“If you don’t want to cook, we can order you something,” Rayen suggested, looking over her shoulder.

“No, I enjoy cooking with you.”

“I do too.”

With her instructing him, they cooked meat and baked some potato wedges. As she settled to eat at the table, Amon handed out glasses to everyone.

“I’ve planned for us to go to a horse race on Sunday,” Rayen announced.

“Will you be betting?”

“If you allow.”

“Why would I forbid it? I think Amon is far more entitled to restrict you on your bets.”

“Then I will bet.”

“Is it one of those where I have to be all dressed up?”

“I was hoping you would allow me to buy you a dress.”

“Mhm… With a hat and all?”

His beaming eyes were enough of an answer. He didn’t need to speak.

“Will you dress up too?”

“Of course.”

“Okay, but only if you hold on to me so I don’t fall in the heels and embarrass us.”

“I would never let you fall. And you may wear any shoes you’re comfortable in.”

“Thank you.”

After dinner, she went up to the library where Silas had set down the bags from the bookstore. As she walked up the stairs, she felt a cool breeze pass her and saw Silas appear out of thin air in the library’s doorway.

“Show off,” Rayen snickered behind her as he laid his hand on her lower back.

In the library, she sat on the floor in front of the couch and pulled the books out of the bags. Rayen sat behind her while Silas rearranged the shelves to make room for a historic romance section.

Rayen picked up a book here and there and read the synopsis, making fun of some of the storylines. Silas seemed to take it personally, so they started snapping at each other.

Gwen thought it was amusing and enjoyed watching them argue with each other. When the first yawn escaped her tired body, Silas and Rayen stopped pondering and guided her to her room. As they walked out the library Amon came up the stairs.

“Everything okay?” she asked, still a little insecure as if she’d pushed him too far.

His eyes softened and a smile curled his lips. “Yes, I was just going over the details of your contract.”

Rayen and Silas stopped in their tracks, their eyes quickly moving between Gwen and Amon.

“Gwendoline has asked me to write up a contract for her to return to her previous position with us.”

“You’d better not mess up and write lots of home office hours into it,” Silas said with a triumphant grin.
