“Do you have horses overseas too?”

“I do. And one day we shall take you to meet every single one.”

“Sounds too good to be true.” She took his hand in hers, weaving her fingers with his. “I still don’t feel good using you like that, the whole money and travel and shopping thing. I don’t want you to think that that’s why I’m with you.”

“We know, little bird.”

At the race track, she held onto Rayen’s arm as he guided her to the horse stables. As soon as they reached them a man in dark blue jeans and button up shirt quickly came towards them.

“Mr. Seavey, I wasn’t expecting you to come by today,” he said with an anxious tone.

Rayen’s posture straightened, his face hardened slightly, reminding her of Amon. “And what is that supposed to mean, Mr. Black? I would hope that your performance doesn’t change because of my appearance.”

The man’s eyes widened in slight terror. “Of course not! Would you like to see Windbreaker before the race?”

Rayen turned to Gwen, his face softening as he looked at her. “How about you go with Mr. Black while I take care of some business?”

“Don’t stay away too long,” she said as she got on her tiptoes and kissed his cheek.

“I could never stay away from you for too long.” Turning back to Mr. Black, Rayen’s face turned hard again. “I do hope for a win this time.”

“We’ve trained very hard for this one, Mr. Seavey.” As Rayen walked off, probably to scare the competing horses, Mr. Black turned his attention to Gwen. “This way, Mrs. Seavey.”

She started to correct him, but the name had a nice ring to it and gave her a fluttery feeling in her stomach.

“How high are Windbreaker’s chances to win the race?” she asked curiously.

“Very high, Mrs. Seavey.”

“I’ve never placed a bet before so I’m hoping my first one won’t be a loss,” she said amused, trying to break the ice Rayen had created.

Mr. Black’s eyes softened. “Is this your first horse race, Miss?”

“Is it that obvious?”

He was too kind, or maybe even scared to answer, but his smile said it all. He led her to a solid black horse, with a beautiful leather saddle and a small man in a jockey uniform standing next to him.

“Mrs. Seavey, this is Windbreaker and her jockey Tommy.”

Tommy turned around, fear flickering over his eyes at the sight of Gwen. “Pleased to meet you, Mrs. Seavey.”

“The pleasure is all mine. I just wanted to meet you and Windbreaker before the race.” She stepped closer wanting to touch the horse. “May I or is that bad luck?”

“Not at all, Mrs. Seavey,” Mr. Black reassured her.

She stepped closer and let her hand run over the muscular neck of the horse. Not wanting to distract either Tommy or Windbreaker for too long, she stepped back and looked around to see if Rayen was nearby. As if he’d heard her thoughts, he came closer, purposely staying close to the competition. Leaving a trail of nervous horses behind him, he smirked and nodded at her to come closer.

“I’ll see you after the race,” she said towards the men. Quickly walked over to Rayen, she hooked her arm in his. “They are terrified of you.”

“They’re paid very well to accommodate my unpleasantness.”

“You were never unpleasant with me, and you paid me well.”

He chuckled and led her to what seemed to be the VIP section. “I always seemed to have a soft spot for you. Though I’ll admit, I planned on being nice to you to tease Amon.”

“I thought as much,” she giggled.

“Though you had me wrapped around your little finger the minute I laid eyes on you.”
